A woman in South Carolina was arrested and jailed overnight over a nine-year overdue video rental.

Kayla Finley, 27, had visited a police station to report a crime, only to find a warrant for her arrest had been issued in 2005, when she was 18.

Isn't jailing some one for this a bit over the top. I don't even think it would be a Criminal Case in the UK, more of a Civil Matter between the Video Store and the Woman in question.

Theft isn't a crime in the UK?

It's more of a Civil Dispute between the Video Store Owner and the Woman, and given the time scale is certainly not a crime which British Police would usually pursue or lock someone up for. The advice would be simple, go to the 'Small Claims Court'.

I doubt that the video store or chain still exists. Who is pressing charges and who will show up as the plaintiff in court?

edit:
"According to warrants, Finley rented the movie in 2005 from the now-defunct Dalton Video. She was sent letters to return the video several times but never responded, according to a warrant, say Fox. Pickens County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Creed Hashe told WYFF4 that when Finley didn't return the movie, the owner of Dalton Video went to a Pickens County magistrate who issued an arrest warrant.

That movie has like a score of 2/3 out of 10.....

I could see this being somewhat OK if she had more than just 1 overdue movie... But even then she shouldn't of been arrested, but probably sued in small claims court.

Those south carlonians can sure be stupid at times. They think they are still a free people, and they vote for people like lindsay graham... So you shouldn't expect much from them.

In a criminal preceding, the State is the "plaintiff."
