New Jersey, in one of the cheaper (but not absolutely cheapest) towns. The Boston area as per Charolastra. $1,500-$2K+ in Manhattan. Splitting a 2-bed with a roommate is cheaper though and a 3+ bed even more so.

People around here with apartments will occasionally look wistfully at apartment listings in cheaper parts of the country online and talk about it when looking for a place locally or if the topic comes up in conversation. Granted, those higher rents generally come with higher salaries but not nearly enough so to close the gap (of course all of us staying here have our own non-economic reasons).

So what is causing all of this?

More Americans than ever before seem to be living in a state of “perpetual adolescence”.

The total amount of student loan debt in the United States has risen to a brand new all-time record of 1.08 trillion dollars.

-Student loan debt accounted for 3.1 percent of all consumer debt in 2003. Today, it accounts for 9.4 percent of all consumer debt.

Meanwhile, our young adults are still really struggling to find jobs.'

Mark Zuckerberg is a huge fan of outsourcing jobs and he is a hardcore Obama supporter. That is why he wants immigration reform, so that he can hire Indian engineers for example instead of American engineers. Because Indian engineers work for less pay.
