There's an excellent clearly-written article about the seminal events and reasons for the conflicts in the Middle East here, which answers questions like : What are Israel and Palestine? Why did they start fighting? Why is Israel occupying Palestinian territories? Why is peace so difficult to achieve?

This is a good map showing just how many Israeli checkpoints there are in the West Bank that make the movement of Palestinians a daily obstacle and trial.

Also a map showing Israeli settlements of the West Bank which are internationally recognized as illegal.

aww poor babies. limiting their movement, you say? maybe sending in WAVES AND WAVES of suicide bombers to blow up women, men and babies in pizzerias, buses and discos wasn't the best way to negotiate with Israel?

We're Palestinian. We think our Arab brethren are on our side. Were offered a state, turn it down more than once, we are stateless. We bomb busses, schools, and restaurants and are surprised that there's a checkpoint to keep bombers out. We elect corrupt officials who steal our money and complain were poor. We have a govt who is supposed to provide for it's people they don't do there job so we blame Israel. We threaten to wipe a country off the map and complain when they don't want to deal with us. We are born in a different country, our family hasn't set a foot in Israel since 48 but are still considered refugees. Whaa whaa

Both sides have committed wrongs in this conflict, but it is very clear that it is the Palestinian people who have suffered the most. Despite all these rockets being fired into Israel, they are obviously not very effective, because here is a graph of the number of monthly Israeli and Palestinian deaths due to conflict since 2000.

*of course the graph is incomplete, it would now show about 1700 Palestinian deaths for July 2014.

IF the Palestinians in the West Bank were so dangerous why are over one hundred thousand Israeli "settlers" choosing to build their expensive homes in the midst of Palestinian territory of the West Bank? They do that because they know that the Palestinians are virtually powerless to fight this occupation.

it's DISPUTED land, to be negotiated if there is ever peace and Palestinians agree to recognize that Israel has the right to exist. Until then, it is land won by Israel in a war.

Powerless my foot! they were offered a state 7 or 8 different times but nothing is ever good enough for them.

Israel wants to live in peace. Why else would they have pulled all Jews out of Gaza in 2005?? If all Israel wants is land, do you know how easy it would be for them to take it?? Israel has peace with Jordan and Egypt. WHO do Palestinians have peace with? Even their brothers in Egypt keep them blocked out on the other side of Gaza because all Palestinians do is MURDER!

A large group of those Israelis are Orthodox Jews who believe in Biblical Israel and their right to live anywhere that is considered Biblical Israel. Quite few of those Orthodox Jews are American Jews who moved to Israel in order to do so.

I am not sure why you haven't included all the Israelis that have died from Palestinian Arab terrorist attacks since 1948 or even the ones that died from Palestinian Arab terror attacks in 1920, 1929 and 1936-1939. That would be a fairer comparison.

They are extremists. Even most Israelis do not like some of these ultra-orthodox Jewish sects.

It was three teens of one of these sects that abducted, beat and burned alive a 16 year old Palestinian boy in retribution for the murder of the 3 Israeli young people.

Read all about these extremists, who are increasingly becoming involved in Israeli politics here, and anti-Palestinian beliefs have infected most of the Israeli populatin:

http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/20...party-faithful

"a kind of casual anti-Arab rhetoric has infected political life. “There are fewer inhibitions now about expressing hatred for the Arabs,” Yossi Klein Halevi, a scholar at the Shalom Hartman Institute, in Jerusalem, told me. “The taboos against hostility toward Arabs have been seriously lowered in these last twelve years since the second intifada. The political culture has changed.” Uri Savir, Israel’s chief negotiator of the Oslo Accord, wrote that “most young Israelis believe that Israeli Arabs do not deserve equal rights, and many believe that their votes count less than Jewish votes—a prescription for racism, not democracy.”
