I'm sorry, this is reality, today. Get out of your cloistered ivory tower.
Can you give me some examples of these "highly skilled jobs" that pay $12-15/ hr?
I know nurses make much more, so do computer programmers, airline pilots, licensed electricians and physical therapists. What "highly skilled" jobs did you have in mind?
Because many people recognize that while hand-outs are not the solution, we ultimately need people at varying income levels to be able to earn a basic living in order for society to remain viable. You go too far down the path where no one can make a living other than white collar software types, you end up with problems.

First year electrical apprentices make $15 per hour to start where I live. By the time they get their journeyman's license they are making around $30 per hour, give or take.

If you knew what first year airline pilots make you'd get sick. It's often less than $12 per hour in their first year. Experience pilots make over $100K, however.

There's 5 for you. Do you need more examples? Watch Mike Rowe's Dirty Jobs for a while and understand the great majority of them fit in the "under $16/hr" category.

Exactly. And electricians are not near the top of "highly skilled" workforce.

Let's add bus drivers - even school bus drivers. Very few of them get to $16/hr.
