I'm atheist, but I find pledging allegiance to the state more objectionable than the mention of an imaginary being--although of course the latter should not be endorsed by public entities either.
If I were Christian I'd be horrified at the blasphemous idea of identifying God with some form of political organization.

There are some circumstances in which I would defend the country, but anyone whose allegiance to the country is determined by a pledge they were brainwashed into saying in school is a waste of skin.

New Jersey family has sued their school district over saying "Under God" on Pledge of Allegiance. Judge will decide whether it's Constitutional or not; a phrase that was added in 1954 when "In God We Trust" was declared the official motto of the USA. N.J. Constitution does mention "Almighty God" as well.
MA ruled it Constitutional earlier and believes it is not discriminating against atheists.
I wonder if they will also declare Lincoln's Gettysburg Address "unconstitutional" as well, and forbid it to be read and learned (we had to memorize it when I was in school), because that's where the words "under God" were adopted from.
Most liberals probably don't know that, because they know nothing of our history.

I imagine there's a ton of illegal immigrants who are more patriotic about the U.S. than I am. They struggled to get here. I just happened to shoot out of a vagina within national borders.
I'm not rushing off to give secrets to Russia or anything, but I don't feel any special loyalty to a colorful bit of cloth or whatever it's supposed to represent. Given the chance I'm sure I could be just as happy in Canada or New Zealand or England.

Actually I was just reading up on that. There's at least a minority of people who believe Lincoln meant "God willing", not "united under one diety". So one nation, God willing?
IT doesn't mention any one particular God. I'm not a complete Atheist, so I don't understand the complaint from their end.
This was added much later after our founding. Many state constitutions mention God in them, however the Federal Constitution does not, this was on purpose.
No, it was not.
The purpose of the Constitution was to establish the framework of our Federal government; separation of powers, and the limitations of each branch. Those powers not designated to any branch of the Federal government are left to the individual States.
The Constitution did not need to mention God, but it did establish that the government shall not prohibit the free exercise of religion, nor establish any religious sect; i.e., Episcopal, Presbyterian, etc, as the officially recognized church (as the Church of England or as in Virgina, the Episcopal Church).
The Declaration of Independence mentions God as the source of our unalienable rights, and declares that it is the purpose of government to protect those rights.

The Northwest Ordinance specifically mentions "religion, morality" and "schools and the means of education" in the same sentence. Doesn't that seem to indicate that religion and morality should be taught in schools?
