We're those groups violating the law by lying to be non-profit?
Firstly I don't recall any of them being denied tax exempt status however they were delayed and that's important becsue of the time frame, this occurred leading up to the 2010 election. All that is besides the point.
It's the fact that 100% of certain Conservative groups like those with tea party in their name were targeted that is the issue. AFAIK the IRS cannot do that under any circumstances even if they could somehow manage to do it non partisan. You're targeting a group because of it's ideology and in this case it was only conservative groups. In comparison about 30% of groups with "progressive" in their name were flagged using a non partisan criteria that would have raised the flag on any group.

Tea party groups have made it known their anti tax behavior, and it seems like that includes abusing tax exempt status. Is it really that surprising that the groups that take such a hard stance are also engaged on taxes also try and do much to avoid them....
