Was just watching the news and they showed Syrians crying and saying they "have to get to Germany". I don't get it. If they are refugees they should be happy anywhere in the EU as they are just as safe in Austria, the Czech Republic, or wherever. Is that fixation on Germany still because of Merkel's stupid remarks?

Say, there is a war in Canada and lots of people flee to the US. Wouldn't it be odd if they arrived in Montana and cried and said that they have to get to California?

Not only do they have a right, but given their position at the fore of this invasion, they have a responsibility to do so as well. A responsibility that they (and they alone, it seems) have upheld admirably.

The NYT editorial board and Sheikh Muhammad Ayed make most of the same arguments - Europe is old and tired, and must accept vital young Muslims to work and breed it back to life.

Many European leaders have described the refugees who are risking their lives to get to the Continent as a burden. But there is good reason to believe that these immigrants will contribute more to Europe economically than they will take from it.
Numerous studies have found that immigrants bolster growth by increasing the labor force and consumer demand. …
Immigrants can be particularly important for countries like Germany that have low birthrates and aging populations.

It's heartening to see a very long list of excellent reader comments trashing the NYT editorial.

Does the NYT Editorial Board EVER read their own readers’ comments, especially regarding immigration and migration?
Do they care that these sorts of open borders, naive editorials are infuriating to many liberal and left readers?
And why does the NYT print cropped, hand-picked, and outright agitprop photos trying to convince the unwary that most of these are middle class families when in fact the overwhelming majority seem to be young men of military age?
Seriously, I am wondering if there is a strategy here or if the NYT editors just don’t care, or just are this out of touch with their readers.

Honestly, I am not sure how you can say this will be boon and not a burden. Going back to past articles in your paper, I have read about the Muslim communities in France that have failed to assimilate instead living in slums. I have read in your paper the stories of young college graduates in Spain, France and other European countries that cannot find permanent work. The unemployment rate for this group is said to be well above 20%, yet to seem to think, that European countries can absorb hundreds of thousands or even millions of people. Finally, there have been the recent stories about the children of Muslim immigrants who have gone to Syria to fight with ISIS. How do you find this to be a boon?

Besides Germany's rather generous asylum policies the reason is probably very simple: Frau Merkel threw down the welcome mat and that message has resounded through Eastern Europe all the way to Northern Africa and Middle East. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...s-explain-why/

We saw the same here in the USA when Obama ordered his administration to back off on deportations and other actions against illegal immigrants; the border with Mexico was soon overrun including thousands of children with or without their mothers. Again word got out (correctly nor not) that the US government was putting out the welcome mat.

Much of Eastern European countries are in no shape economically nor politically to accept large number of migrants, especially in many parts those who happen to be Muslims. I mean can you see Bosnia suddenly offering to take in thousands of Muslims?

OTOH Germany is at least of now offering very generous terms to asylum seekers: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world...09a_story.html

Conditions for women and girls at some shelters are so perilous that females are being described as "wild game" fighting off Muslim male predators. But many victims, fearing reprisals, are keeping silent, social workers say.
At the same time, growing numbers of German women in towns and cities across the country are being raped by asylum seekers from Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Many of the crimes are being downplayed by German authorities and the national media, apparently to avoid fueling anti-immigration sentiments.

Talk about getting things backwards there, Ayed; it's your Muslim countries that are tired, broken down toxic dumps. Def NOT most of Europe in 2015.

Sometimes when I see those people in interviews I can't help but think most of them are outright dislikeable

Just saw a refugee on TV, complaining about the cold weather So I checked the current weather down there in Hungary and Serbia, lows are in the 50's, highs in the 70's Maybe winter will end the stream of refugees in a natural way, at least for half a year.
