Jesus H Christ people go out and Celebrate on Monday because you can.

Raise a beer, have a cup a joe, BBQ with family, make love to your significant other, visit fallen loved ones at the cemetery, watch the PBS Memorial Day Tribute, volunteer to make someone's life easier or comfort those in pain, smoke a doobie, go for a ride on your motorcycle, go to work, WTF ever.

Just understand that millions have paid the price with their lives in service to this country. Many hundreds of millions more benefited from that service.

I'm not ashamed of my country or patriotism either. I don't know why people that hate it don't just go live somewhere else.

To sum it up, I'm against military action that isn't purely self-defense, meaning I don't support the military or the troops in the majority of cases. Politicians enter war for the benefit of themselves and the private industries who are politically connected, not because we're defending against an attacker. The U.S. is actually the country doing the most attacking.

I understand that the troops and many officers don't make the call on what they're ordered to do, but that doesn't give them a free pass. All the evils of war are done because good people follow the orders of those who want to do evil. I don't give Nazi soldiers a pass just because they were following orders.

For the record, I have good friends in the Navy and Army right now (some are fairly high ranking), and I support them as people...just not what they're being used for. It would feel good to celebrate the fact that they put their lives on the line for their country, but they aren't actually heroes. They signed up thinking they were doing something noble, but they're just carrying out the orders of the "elite" whose goal is to help their corporate buddies make money off of it, while maintaining political power.

It makes me angry that they've tricked good men and women into sacrificing themselves for causes that aren't what they're portrayed to be. It's like Lord Farquad in Shrek said: "Some of you may die...but that's a sacrifice I am willing to make."

I am not ashamed of what I had to do while I was in 'Nam. I was trying to save my companions lives and my own. I did what had to be done. I did not sign on to be a thug for the French Michelin company.

I am ashamed of my country for being there and everywhere else we have been fighting ever since. Fighting to protect investors anywhere is moral delinquency and an economic sin. They knew the risk when they made the investment and protecting their mistakes just distorts the real market.

This is not a happy weekend for me. I grieve for all those that fought for the wrong cause at the wrong time. I mostly grieve for those that died trying to save their companions.

Believe what you want: my brother served in Nam and our son in desert storm. There have always been some who join for reasons like you are talking about, but that doesn't mean all of them. My issue, btw is with anyone who makes statements agaisnt out country and our military. What you are saying is partially true, but it does not apply to all who have joined. I know a few others, BTW who have also served in the past 20 or so years. My best friends daughter and son in law joined in 1994, both are retired officers now. Both served in Iraq or Afghanistan.

No one likes war,we all wish we could live in a world of peace, but it will never happen. If you really think only those who want to get away from something or gain something from serving maybe it is time to bring back the draft. How do you feel about that? Or do you think all the young men and women in ROTC or in the military academies are there just to get something out of it or to escape a bad situation?
