I did read an article where they were saying for companies wanting to cut costs, some are doing away with health insurance for the spouse and this may push more into doing this as a way to save money. I know the company my husband works for started charging a monthly surcharge if the spouse has access to health insurance through their own employer but choose not to sign up but to be covered under the same policy as the husband/wife.
My employer has already announced they will end benefits for same sex partners in 2017. And they've been surcharging for the last few years if your spouse has access to benefits, but elects to enroll in their coverage instead.

There's no issue here. Gays can marry now so only married couples should be able to get partner coverage.
