Yeah, he is right in a way, because as Reagan said, the heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism, and libertarians have tended to like the idea of open borders: Barry Goldwater | Open Borders: The Case
Population increase, whether through immigration or birthrate, does not result in unemployment. The US population in 1900 was 76 million and the unemployment rate was in the neighborhood of 4%. By 2000 population had grown to 282 million, yet the unemployment rate was about the same. Immigration does tend to depress wages, just by simple supply/demand. Supply goes up, price (wage rate) goes down. But that is only in the short term.
If someone wants to come here to work and make a life, why would I object? That's what happened w/ my great-grandparents who came over from Germany & Sweden.
But the whole calculus changes with the advent of the welfare state. A few years ago in Seattle a Somali grocery was raided by the feds. They took away his ability to accept food stamps, which he complained would put him out of business.
"Ninety-nine percent of my customers used food stamps. Today I have no business," Jama said. "I can't pay rent; I can't pay electricity."
In the context of the modern behemoth welfare state, immigration must be restricted and regulated. I expect that this will happen in time by inexorable p re

Massive increase in population does not result in job shortages and unemployment? Immigrants must come here legally not illegally with or without a welfare state.
Thank you for articulating the right-wing business position on open borders Sanders was referring to. Bernie isn't making this stuff up.

Open borders would be -
If a worker wants to come into the United States and work, and the worker has a job setup that can support him - then the government only role is to do a criminal background check and give him a tax id so he can pay his taxes.
The worker must make enough to not qualify for government handouts (welfare, etc) but would qualify for healthcare/etc.
I for one don't want the US Govt telling me how much I should pay or where is the best place to find qualified workers for the right price.
Open borders are supported, or at least condoned, by quite a large element on the left. Kudos to Sanders for making a clear, forthright argument against it.
Numbers USA is an openly partisan Republican group that seeks to elect Republicans. Like what the NRA has become. They'd rather elect Republicans who are on the opposite side of their issues than Dems or independents who have their views.
Nope.
All Numbers U.S.A. cares about is your voting record on immigration and illegal immigration.
They gave former DEMOCRAT U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan a C+, for example.
And they give REPUBLICAN Senator John Cornyn (TX) an F.
They also give F's to Arizona REPUBLICAN Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake, and to South Carolina REPUBLICAN Senator Lindsey Graham.
Don't drink the Bernie Sanders kool-aid.
He gets a D. And he's a liar. He can't hide from his voting record.
If you do not have enforceable borders we are not longer a country, just a free trade zone. Koch industries bring work and development to America.
Gorge Soros the left's Champion wants to bring the One Government Theory into play.
The DNC is out for control and of the Left Progressive Ideals. This thread is very disturbing and is not of American Growth.
