Firearms-Control Legislation and Policy: Switzerland | Law Library of Congress

Firstly the Swiss are a predominantly law abiding society while the U.S. .......not so much.

Secondly, firearm culture in Switzerland is based upon common sense and a willingness to enact firearm controls to maintain safety and security.

Personal carry or concealed carry are very rare and based upon logic and requirement rather than desire.

Transportation of firearm to ranges and/or hunting areas is strictly controlled with direct to and from routes carefully observed and monitored. No stopping off at the local watering hole or shopping at Walmart with weapon in car

Common sense with regard to safety of both themselves and their neighbouring countries factoring greatly into their gun controls.

Now there's an interesting concept, eh? Common sense assuming priority in your consideration of not just yourself but of your neighbours as well.

Interesting link to various countries:

Detailing the difference between Switzerland and the United States would then also have to include that the Swiss are basically a homogeneous society, in other words, none of the racial tension that accounts for a large number of shootings and homicide in the U.S. Please don't call me a racist, it is a fact. And as you pointed out, the Swiss are basically law abiding, many areas of the United States are not.

And, yes, we are planning a move to Europe in a year or two just to experience a better quality of life and am looking forward to see what it is like to live somewhere without a 'gun culture' and gun ownership, which I believe has been shown to actually make people feel more paranoid.
Don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.

Every adult? I don't think so. All young men are drafted into the military where they recieve military and weapon training. Imagine if mandatory conscription was a prerequisite to gun ownership in the U.S.?

Switzerland trails behind the U.S. in per capita gun ownership. All guns are permitted and automatic weapons are banned.

The Swiss maintain a culture of personal responsibility and safety and are generally risk adverse. It is reflected in everything they do.

99% of the people have mandated private healthcare insurance with defined minimum coverage. Insurers are mandated to cover the healthcare risks of the elderly and pre- existing conditions. The government owns and operates most hospitals. The government subsidizes 40% of the people's premiums.

The federal and canton governments stay out of social welfare. Instead, local communities ( think counties) tax and handle it. At this level, everyone knows everyone's business given the population is only 8 million.

Housing tends to be more permanent with property transferring generation to generation. The cost of living is high and the standard of living trends moderate.

Most people are bilingual.

While guns are common in suicides, they are not in violent crimes.
Huge differences between a country of 8 million generally like- minded people and 315 million with more personalities than people.

Anyone who is so suggestible as to feel "pressured" into buying a gun, should definitely not own a gun.

It's completely different here in San Francisco. I never see any advistertinmests or anything. However, I am encouraged to buy one because the criminals in this area are so confident and brazen. There are news reporters being robbed for their equipment in broad daylight. Criminals here are not afraid about robbing anyone and most of them all use guns, but the government here is so anti-gun, hardly anyone owns one, it's virtually impossible to even get a concealed carry permit as well.

Liberty Mutual keeps pressuring me to buy auto insurance through them.

That Flo character wants me to buy insurance through Progressive.

My neighbors keep watering their lawns and I feel pressured to keep mine watered too.

My vet keeps sending me reminders that my cat needs some sort of booster shots for outdoor cats - but he's an indoor cat.

Everywhere I look, people are posting and showing off pictures from their beach vacations and I haven't gone to the beach this year.

Oh the pressure. Not sure if I can take it much longer.

Odd. I live in a state where a large percentage of people own a gun and I feel absolutely no pressure to own a gun. I think it's probably a condition that needs professional counseling if you feel this way.
