No, there are not "pointless". They are generally pretty accurate. But the electoral college system means that there is always a chance that the DISTRIBUTION of votes will offset the POPULAR vote. Why do you think politicians pay attention to particular swing states?

correct, in our system it's the electoral college. the vast majority of the time the electoral college follows the popular vote.
any national poll would reflect the popular vote. to have a poll that better reflected the electoral would require individual polls for each district in a state then coordinating the results.
