These areas weren't always that expensive. The government is basically forcing these people to move, so they can come and redevelop these areas for the Rich White trust fund babies to take over.
A lot of gentrification is private businesses, not the government.
When you see government gentrification, it tends to be in places that are almost completely abandoned.
I was using the word investment in the sense that all of those examples represent the act of devoting time, effort, or energy to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a worthwhile result. Like providing higher education and health care, paid for with public funds as an investment in the future of this country. Because well-educated and healthy people hold higher-paying jobs and pay more taxes.
Tax revenue can be redistributed in a way that benefits all of us, rather than providing huge corporate bailouts, massive tax breaks to corporations, and funding needless and ill-conceived military actions.
The rich have benefited from an extremely favorable tax system over the past 30 years. In return, they have reduced the number of stable, well-paying jobs. They have kept wages low or moved their operations overseas to increase profits and keep their shareholders happy. Trickle-down economics has failed us.
In any city you go, some folks are going to earn little or no money. Therefore, the cities with the highest inequality will always be the cities wealthier people choose to live in.
Not at all. Liberals are all too happy to let us know how much richer liberal cities are compared to the poor whites trash in the south while also bitching up Wall Street, the Koch brothers, the 1%, wealth inequality, and all the rest. So which is it? Liberals are either the party of big money and greed or only conservatives make all the money in NYC and San Fran and the other liberal Meccas.
Or maybe large cities that headquarter multinational corporations can spread the cost over billions of customers which drives up the price of everything. Maybe, just maybe, the guy living in Sweetwater, Texas who earns $15/hr has a higher standard of living than the guy in San Fran getting paid twice as much for the exact same thing.
The guy living in Sweetwater will never round up the money to afford to pick up and move to San Fran. The guy in San Fran could move to Sweetwater on a couple of two week paychecks.
Low wage/low COL areas aren't good for rounding up money for cross-country moves. You're pretty much stuck in a real life version of Under The Dome.
Can you give me some examples of cities that are not segregated?
"Conservative" San Diego is much more integrated and affordable than "liberal" San Francisco.
I've lived in both cities.

If you can only afford homes in a certain area, that is where you have to live.
Liberals love segregation.
They gentrify non-white neighborhoods and drive non-whites away.
All the while talking about how we must help non-whites.
Then they brag about how "affluent" their cities are.
Well, of course they're affluent after you kick out all the poor folks -- LOL.

Considering that an overwhelming portion of GDP is created in urban areas and that local laws have jack-all to do with tax policy and other things that impact wealth distribution it's better to say that inequality isn't created by cities but rather occurs there.
Why do so many Trump supporters think that liberals and progressives are all lazy people that want everything for free?
Seems like the most liberal cities are the ones with the highest incomes.
What you are seeing is how our nation robs the working class blind, and brings the spoils home to the urban centers run by super-liberal Big Government politicians.
Bernie Sanders supporters are ignorant. I wouldn't say they are lazy and collect welfare.

To say that any majority of these or those supporters are lazy and collecting welfare is absurd. AquaDulce is absolutely correct.
We have to understand that elections are a numbers game. Obama basically promised Christmas 365 and his "gonna get me some of dat Obama money" idea rsonated enough to pull in a few million additional votes.
It's too bad that the economic condition of African Americans has actually gotten worse under him. Merry Christmas, hope you enjoyed the coal.

There is some confusion about what gentrification is. It rarely has anything to do with eminent domain, as one poster believed. Gentrification is the process of renewal and rebuilding that accompanies the influx of middle-class or affluent people into deteriorating areas that often displaces poorer residents.
I am not in favor of kicking minorities out of their neighborhoods. I just can't afford to live in middle-class or affluent neighborhoods. Sadly, the more white people that are forced to move to less expensive neighborhoods because of economics, the higher the prices go because of demand.
I'm aware. I live near DC and Baltimore and the once blighted areas I knew from when I was younger are unrecognizable today, save maybe for Baltimore in some spots.
For what its worth, I know services in the city have improved to a degree as well, which also means the cities are getting the much needed tax money to fund these services as well which I find to be a good thing. You need a solid tax base for these things to happen and that is hard to turn down. Low-income areas do not bring that.
I think it was on the DC Reddit page but there was a picture of a house with a sign in front of the yard saying they didn't want gentrification in their neighborhood and that it "breeds privilege, domination, classism, and community takeover". Take that for what you will.
