Do Blacks get tougher punishments than whites even when they commit the same crimes and have similar records?
Another Rumor. I remember reading a comparison of sentences vs the actual act committed, and level of violence (as opposed to the criminal violation actually charged), and whites, by far, were more heavily punished. For examples, if a person assaulted a person of x number of years and did y amount of damage with a certain level of ferocity etc., (that objectified these factors), whites and asians received much stiffer penalties. Another factor that may make it appear there is a disparity is that white tend to commit crimes more on the non-white-collar end of the spectrum.
In our criminal justice system, yes. White people do more drugs and Blacks make up a majority of all the arrests which make up 19% of the population. The reason being is that black people are (for the most part especially in our major cities) ghettoized. Many police officers have implicit biases which makes them suspect any black man who has baggy pants and blasted rap music to have drugs. Police officers are just as ordinarily Americans who hold biases. Every single person holds implicit biases and they are subconscious thoughts were think we don't even have. Anyways, in our society many of these black kids who wear certain types of clothing are seen as thugs and will be targeted a lot more than white kids in affluent suburbs. In reality the rich suburban white kids will do more drugs than those black kids in major cities. In the future the white kids will be off the hook and have gotten lucky they weren't caught while a black man who has been caught, will have a tougher time finding a job with a record. Some kids who aren't able to get a job can't even get a job at McDonald's with a record! If you have no job and no cash then the only option is to do the same thing you did before which was getting back into drugs and sellin'.
Possibly, but what the studies fail to show is that often Black defendants already have lengthy criminal records by the time they are punished.
So Blacks and whites with the same criminal records will get similar punishments when they commit the same crimes?
