I have never seen a cities crime rate reduced by massive focus on it by the media. In fact, I think the massive media focus exacerbates crime rates. If there has not been a killing or robberies in your neighborhood, but you keep hearing about them, you are going to be on edge and if you get into a confrontation all the media attention about murder will make you think you have to kill the person before they kill you. Think "police mentality". Everything is a perceived threat to a police officers life, which is why they shoot to kill even unarmed people. Media focus on crime makes everyone feel that their life is threatened in an argument or confrontation and hence that you must kill or be killed. Also, the more murder happens the more acceptable it becomes as a means of dealing with conflict. Murder begets more murders. Mass shootings begets more mass shootings.

There are always unstable people in the population. When unstable people see other unstable people committing acts of violence, it conditions them to behave that way too. We are a copy cat society, but a stable person is not going to go out and kill people over nonsense. Thus, its the unstable copying the unstable and the media attention feeds and fuels this syndrome. When I lived in Detroit there were over 600 murders a year. I would not have known that if killings were not always on the news. Consequently, had you said "Boooo.." to me.....I probably would have shot your azz out of fear you were going to kill me.

Information overload due to too much news and the "if it bleeds it leads" mindset of the media.

Baltimore finished 2015 with 344 murders. While in raw numbers it's lower than Chicago, this is something no one is considering. Baltimore has a population of 621,849. This calculates to a murder rate of 55.3 murders per 100,000. The whole land area thing is a moot point if you consider what percentage of Baltimore consists of the violent areas.

St. Louis, which has 315,685 residents, and had 188 murders in 2015, had a murder rate of 59.5 murders per 100,000.

Where does Chicago stand? Chicago finished 2015 with 468 murders. With a population of 2,720,546, this adds up to 17.2 murders per 100,000.

The rate of murder is where it counts, not raw numbers.

And what this also tells us, is that folks from Baltimore and St. Louis aren't keeping up with posting here about their murders.

Slackers.

And there is more. It isn't just Baltimore and St. Louis. Which Chicago is getting headlines for a rise in murders, guess who isn't? Cincinnati. Which Chicago has a murder rate of 17.2 murders per 100,000, Cincinnati was around 23 murders per 100,000 in 2015, up from 20.5 per 100,000 in 2014.

Murders are soaring in Milwaukee too. 24.1 per 100,00 in 2015

Homicides soar in Milwaukee, along with many theories on cause

The highest number of murders Chicago has seen in a year since records were kept was 970, back in 1974. This means a murder rate around 29 murders per 100,000.

Actually Chicago has pretty decent gun control laws.

Did you know that 40 to 60% of the firearms used in Chicago shootings originate from Indiana gun shows?

Why?

You do not need background checks to purchase weapons at Indiana gun shows. There is no limit to the number of weapons you can purchase at Indiana gun shows. Under 18? No problem you can buy too, just only hand guns and shotguns.

Why is this relevant? Because scumbags go to Indiana gun shows, stock up on assorted weapons and then drive the 30 miles to Chicago and sell them on the streets.

How do you like them apples?

Lower rate? You mean more lax regulations?

It doesn't. Indianapolis has a higher crime rate per capita than Chicago believe it or not.

Indy ranks in top ten for murder | Fox 59

Chicago, believe it or not, is safer than Indy
