The black family survived slavery and Jim Crow but could not stand up to the Great Society.

Quote:
Economics professor Walter E. Williams writes: "According to the 1938 Encyclopaedia of the Social Sciences, that year 11 percent of black children and 3 percent of white children were born to unwed mothers." In mid-1960s America, the nation's out-of-wedlock birth rate (which stood at 7.7 percent at the time) began a rapid and relentless climb across all demographic lines, a climb that would continue unabated until 1994, when the Welfare Reform Act helped put the brakes on that trend. Today the overall American illegitimacy rate is about 40.7 percent (29.1 percent for non-Hispanic whites). For blacks, it is about 72 percent—approximately three times the level of black illegitimacy that existed when the War on Poverty began in 1964.

Clarification - they definitely COULD stand up, they were just encouraged not to.

The government made it an easy choice.

The government made that easy. That is what the Great Society did..relieve the burden of raising children from the father.

Please stop you're obsession with black people.

The out of wedlock birth for whites is is about 30%, for Latinos 53%, for Asians 17%, and for Native Americans it's 67%. Yet I hear no criticism of these other groups. These statistics could also mean that blacks tend to marry later than whites.

And no the Great Society did not cause high out of wedlock birthrates. It's not a black problem, it's a poverty problem.

Why would liberals oppose welfare assistance for two-parent families? I thought that was a conservative policy, based on the idea that the father should be supporting the family.

The fact that you "hear criticism of blacks" by the presentation of simple raw data is a bit concerning.

I do not presume to speak for the OP, who very well could have started this thread simply to bad mouth black folks, certainly not unusual here on CD, however I did not see anything to suggest that to be the case in this instance.

Yeah, a lack of welfare makes people more productive and successful.

That's obviously why Americans are the healthiest people on the planet, being one of the few countries where healthcare is considered a commodity rather than a right.
