I think he should take 1 Zika child that a parent cannot care for, and he should raise that child at his expense...particularly because Congress -- of which he is a member -- are not doing their jobs, particularly in terms of this health crisis...and particularly in terms of his state. What if his constituency includes a large number of Hispanics who feel this way? Isn't he then speaking on their behalf, as all good politicians should, but don't?
I've done a lot of research with pols in certain states with large Hispanic populations and most are very religious and very anti-abortion, although their votes don't reflect that.

That's true, but he may be representing the majority of his constituents. And if that's the case, then I say FINALLY a politician is doing what he's supposed to do. It may not be what a lot of people want to hear, but what he says will have no bearing on anything in the end, anyway.
And I HATE when a politician says, "I can't vote for X because I'm Catholic." Just once I wish someone would say, "It has nothing to do with you, you idiot, you're there to represent the people who voted for you."

I can't believe he came up with such a stupid statement! A child born with microcephaly could cost society hundreds of thousands to a million to care for. If ever there was a need for abortion, this is it! Usually, people who oppose abortion are the first ones to decry large expenditures on social programs like Medicaid. Are these anti-abortion people willing to cough up the money to pay for the Zika babies?
We don't get to decide who is or is not worthy of life & the money it takes to provide for that life.

Thanks for the info, as I don't know the demographics of his constituency, or what their feelings might be - and didn't look it up.
So he's saying this based on personal belief, on being Catholic, which is not representing what his people want. That's just maddening.
I'm Catholic and against abortion, but would never impose my beliefs on other people. I just hate that they misuse their position of power in this way.
