No it won't be legal to hire a child prostitute but those under 18 won't suffer criminal charges for selling sex.
Sorry I think that they should be charged as criminals even if they are under 18 just like if they are stealing or selling drugs, etc.
It's a crime.
We need to stop normalizing criminal behavior.
I'm glad your second sentence acknowledges that your title is dishonest.
The point of the law is not to allow children to sell their bodies for sex. It's to treat them as victims. The article makes a bold claim that this law will cause law enforcement to look the other way when child prostitution is occurring since they can't arrest the child. But that's not what will happen. They'd arrest the patron and take the child to safety, where they would attempt to get some information from her/him in finding who is putting them on the streets, since it's unlikely that there's an epidemic of underage girls choosing to sell their own bodies for sex.

What if they are the ones putting themselves on the street?
As I mentioned in another post it's no longer necessary to work as a streetwalker with the internet.
Yes there are still streetwalker prostitutes but they can make more money on backpage or other 'escort' websites.
They don't need pimps for this either.
If it's just them prostituting themselves and a pimp isn't coercing them they shouldn't be treated like criminals?..

Why not?
Because they are chiidren who we as a Society do not hold as responsible for their actions as we would an adult. And it may well be that some 17 year old will sell his or her body from a foster home. But we still give it a try. What is it we lose if they don't make it?
Oh brother. Yes probably to feed a drug habit, get money to eat, etc. Real "choice" there.
Underage prostitutes do that work for the same range of desperate and mundane reasons over-18 prostitutes do. The difference is that society has decided to protect kids by limiting their ability to choose that life. This California law appears to weaken that protection.

Article linked and titled is B.S. and anyone who took it as is without researching the other side should be ashamed of themselves.
This thread is long on attempts at shaming and short on rational defense of a law which appears to limit the ability of authorities to stop underage prostitution.
