Dont own a semi auto, nor bother reading up on them. Ive stuck with what I grew up with, bolt and lever action and pump shotguns, and revolvers. So I guess I misused the term.
Does that somehow make the AR15 not a military style rifle?

What is dangerous about not knowing about a gun I dont currently own? You make no sense. Did I say I wouldnt bother learning after buying? Likely I will take a CC course.

I dont grasp the desire to own a military syle weapon . It seems a little like wanting to play soldier to me. I have never had any problems getting deer with a bolt or lever action rifle. I think Bushmaster tipped off the primary reason for people wanting one with their ad campaign about "get your man card back".
Having said that, the topic of the thread is about why people call the AR15 a military style weapon. It is because that is what it is.
