How do you know they were "all legal"?

I thought it was a great commercial.

On this:

ITA that it is silly to complain about there being no brown/black faces and that this was an historic tale that was done very well IMO.

Wanted to note though that I am from the Midwest and am black and there was free blacks in St. Louis in that time period and many times they lived in German neighborhoods because Germans were more hospitable to blacks than the Irish and other ethnic Europeans. A few lines of my own family were free black people and moved to Ohio in the 1850s/1860s prior to the Civil War. They all lived in predominantly German neighborhoods.

But I agree there would be very few "brown" faces around at that time. When my family moved to our city there were only 500 black people out of about 20,000 people in the city.

As far as I'm aware of, in the 19th century there really wasn't any "process" of legality for immigrants like there is today. So one could say all the European immigrants were "illegal" or "legal" depending on your view point on the matter.
