Who cares what type of car that you drive. Do you really think they are raising the gas tax because they want to clean up the air? The price of gas is already too high. The state tax adds over 40 cents per gallon plus over 18 cents for federal. No one remembers that gas used to be less than a dollar per gallon. Now at this price it is a major expense. So instead of trying to lessen the hardship the state keeps raising the gas tax. If anything they should be lowering the tax.
With all the overpopulation and traffic it would stand to reason that they are already raising more money from just all the extra cars on the road.
Oh pucker up, buttercup. You're crying about $3 per gallon or so, when in the UK, they pay $7 per gallon and people survive just fine. It's just Americans LOVE to overextend themselves needlessly, and shoot themselves in the foot with their NIMBYism
PA has the highest state gasoline tax at 58¢ per gallon and some of the worst roads in the USA. A lot of the tax goes to fund SEPTA, which handles the Philadelphia area transportation system (subways, trolleys, buses and commuter rail). The rest of the state gets the shaft.
Christ, you'd think California was forcing motorists to give up a kidney for donation or something.
The freeways are ridiculously overloaded, so anything that encourages shorter commutes, carpooling or - gasp! horror! - public transportation is a worthwhile endeavor. LA Metro is getting its stuff together, bicycle routes are popping up, it's enjoyable to watch. (In some cases, literally. California girls on bicycles...)
