I read that story last night from start to finish with a mix of tears and anger. It rattled me a bit. I've seen families similar to this and my overall thought was "people like this should NOT procreate. And yet they do - in multiples - and groom their children into the same miserable existence they came into. Infuriatingly tragic.
The government has to stop incentivizing poverty. This is the story of liberalism.
These social welfare programs are designed to help people who genuinely need our help. But as the OP points out, we do have slugs, the dregs of society who only want to leach off the rest of us.

The same as every other human who actually has the choice to do so if they want without permission from anyone. Do you believe limiting those who can have children to one specific group? I believe that has
been attempted before. Are you going to be choosing those who can have children? What happens when
a few of those children are less than perfect or does not meet your required standards?
Perhaps someone has wondered why you were allowed to have children and they felt you and your groomed children share a miserable existence and are infuriated by your tragic miserable existence.

Their budget was absurd for a family living on 2k a month. $300 cell phones, $100 internet ...
But that wasn't even what bothered me the most. It was the author's description of the utter lack of parenting being provided to the children. They had one child with recurring stomach problems who was allowed to prepare ramen noodles with loads of hot sauce for himself any time of the day or night that he wanted. They can't afford wholesome food, but gave the children a puppy ... who was promptly dropped and injured in the first few minutes of the story. They routinely load the children into their car and drive off to the local pill mill to load up on various opioids. Everything about this family's daily life is so dysfunctional and detrimental that it's a wonder they've survived this long. Just a toxic situation all the way around.
