Yes, as Comey said, "not in those exact words." But he understood the intent of Trump's comments.
It's not about what Comey understood what the President wanted. It's about what the President said, and there was nothing illegal or obstructionist by the President saying he "hoped".
Comey fired for his irrational way with words,his abstract unclear behavior with his testimony. How did this guy get to be the FBI director? My gosh, this guy is so inconsistent.
Comey got a new boss and meet/talked to him many times. Comey does not like or "feel" comfortable with Trump. Trump is different and keeps wanting to talk to him about ongoing investigation. He liked Obama because he left him alone. Obama probably used other staff to communicate with Comey. Trump went right to the source. Unheard of in Washington. You are suppose to use the "little people" to have the connections.
Comey probably was worried about his job. Not uncommon for a new boss to reassure you that your job is safe. New bosses do that all the time while watching your performance. No trust or loyalty between new boss and new employee...very common.
