this is simple.....any U.S. territory that are U.S. Citizens and U.S. Congress and federal laws rules them should have full representation in Congress.......it doesn't matter if the territory is poor or rich, or whatever.
If the U.S. Government invaded the island in 1898, placed by force U.S. Citizenship on them and forces them to obey all federal laws the least they can do is give them representation in Congress so they have a voice for the Federal Laws they have been forced to live by for over 1 century.....make them part fully of the system or cut them loose which that boat have sailed a long time ago.
if some of you can't see that then you all are hypocrites because if the same thing is done to you some of you would start a war because of it or be complaining here how bad you have it that you have NO representation and you have to obey all federal laws and have no say. Wasn't that the concept why the U.S. was founded?
a President has no say in territories....its Congress............... Trump will look stupid blocking the right for 3.5 million U.S. Citizens to have representation in congress for the laws they lived under for over a century......that's like denying former black slaves U.S. Citizenship for ignorant reasons like they tried to do in 1865........do you want to be on the wrong side of history.
Based on your criteria, maybe we should remove Mississippi and replace it with Puerto Rico.
Oh---gimme a break! Once WaPo did an article about PR. The article pointed out that if PR becomes a state, it will take them 50 years to get where MS is now.
Puerto Rico should be allowed to become a state if they vote for it. There was overwhelming support for independence for 100 years and the US refused it because of its military strategic location in the Caribbean. It's no longer an important military location, but the majority of Puerto Rican's consider themselves Americans. They have been part of the US for well over 100 years.
English (and Spanish) are the official languages of Puerto Rico. Federal courts are required to be completely in English and most court cases are in English as well. English is growing quite quickly, the local population is not opposed to learning English and both parties (Puerto Rican parties) support required English in schools.
Puerto Rico gets federal subsidies without paying any federal tax, with statehood that would end immediately.
There is no reason Puerto Rico can't be the Hawaii of the Caribbean. It's already a well developed island, but they do have many problems, some being exacerbated by its continual position of not knowing there future. If they are pushed toward independence, I guarantee you half the population will flee to the US. If granted statehood I think the population will stabilize or at least decrease slower.
If granted statehood I see Puerto Rico becoming similar to Florida politically. A lot of retirees will push the state towards the right. Puerto Rican's are not as liberal as some other Hispanic groups. Along with Cubans, they are pretty well split on the mainland US. As noted before many prominent Puerto Rican's side with Republicans.
Nah, Puerto Rico has one of the highest enlistment rates for the US Army of anybody. Republicans need them for cannon fodder.
Do you know why that is? Ignoring your despicable "cannon fodder" remark, joining the military is a way for them to get out of poverty.
And, yes, go visit and talk to the locals. Many will tell you that they served in the military. Some of the younger ones will tell you that they recently enlisted. Those who have served, will gladly tell you about all the places they were stationed during their time in the service.
