The problem with the GOP is that they never trotted out GW because he was such a liability.
Like it or not, the Clintons were popular after POTUS (60% or more) and they helped Obama. Obama seems to be even more popular now - and will probably get moreso as Americans realize that he accepts ALL people as human beings. It is a stark contrast to Trump and the general GOP.
If this is the case....he will be an asset in any campaign. That's the way politics work. He doesn't care whether you like him or not because even if he walked on water and the Lord declared him his Son, you'd still probably dislike him due to his skin color or the propaganda you've been fed.

The other problem is the left though he walked on water and was declared the son of the lord so you can't see who he truly was.
Obama's legacy is a weaker and more divided America. Obama and Democrats are identity politicians. Obama encouraged class warfare. And the people know it.
Only the Steve Bannons and white supremacists of the world - along with Fox News Watchers and Hate Radio listeners "know" this. Any normal person who listened to him or checked his policies would show that he cared about everyone. His signature piece of legislation gave health care to millions of poor whites in the flyover states - saved countless lives.
It's only due to billionaire-financed right wing media that you somehow turn his accomplishments into "identity politics".

I remember being friends with 2 people who were bullied in middle school by the same group of kids. One would just completely ignore them and keep on going, making them totally irrelevant. The bullies slowly grew bored with him and left him alone.
My other friend was a large aggressive kid with anger issues (he was possibly slightly on the autistic spectrum, I think). This kid always responded to the bullies' by getting really angry and threatening to f them up.
He eventually made good on his promise, and "won" the fight. I wasn't there, but he called me bragging about it later that night. Lol
Sounds like they'd have learnt their lesson and leave him the hell alone from now on, right?
Nope. A few days later, he got jumped and beaten to a pulp with a metal baseball bat by one the bullies' older brother and his friends. He ended up hospitalized and having to have his jaw wired shut, and ended up with permanent damage.
If we're likening foreign relations to playgrounds, I don't think engaging and egging on the bully is the smartest idea.
I think it should scare the bejesus out of the GOP that Obama isn't leaving. The Democrats really do not have another shining star in the wings (and neither do the Republicans) The reason Donald Trump was able to beat the other 12 or so candidates is because all of them are boring as Hell and had no real message. The Democrats didn't have much of a line up either.
But, if Obama gets involved things will change. He will invigorate the party, cause some real talent to consider running, and help them re-establish their position in this country. They learned from this loss and are going to get more on message and more in touch with every day people.
Another factor that will help the Democrats is Donald J Trump himself. If he TRIED to make people dislike and distrust him more he could not do a better job than he is doing. Yeah, he still has that hardcore base (cult) but even the more intelligent among them are starting to say WTF is he doing ? 2018 is going to be VERY interesting.

That is, a majority of whites approve of him. A majority of independents, women, people of different age groups - everyone except one small subgroup.
Republicans.
So, from this data you can draw one of two conclusions.
1. He is well liked by most decent people in this country
or
2. Most decent people are dead wrong about Obama.
