The right-wingers did.

The far-right abandoned any sense of sanity or reason when they decided to use their religion to justify their bigotry and hatred, and chose to turn their backs on science and reason to instead support crazy conspiracy theories and laughable strawmen of "the left," such as see in the OP's post.

It is hilarious and pathetic that a party that mindless stands along side Trump - a morally bankrupt slimebag who molests women and pays neither his taxes nor his employees - is now confused as why other people claim the moral high ground.

Quite frankly, if your opponents are modern right-wingers, claiming the moral high ground is laughably easy. Just show up in something other than a white sheet.
Thank you !

Speaking the truth is a bad thing?

You put the quote marks, tell us just whom you're quoting?

Apparently, it was you!

This whole argument is stupid. Of course people on the left believe they have the moral high ground, just like people on the right and people whose politics are right down the middle.

Can you name me one person, ever, who believed that his or her viewpoint was morally wrong?

Indeed. One good thing to come out of Trump's win is that it stripped the mask off the "religious" right and exposed them for the hypocritical bigots they really are. Trump is the "anti-Christ" in that he's a living embodiment of the OPPOSITE of everything Christ represents. Trump hates almost everyone, has no control over his emotions, does not pay his debts, does not "render unto Caesar," does not help the poor, loves violence, and does not forgive his neighbor or "remove the plank from his own eye" first. Heck, his current obsessions include a mix of trying to start a war with North Korea and finding a way to deny people affordable healthcare - I'm sure Jesus would have LOVED those goals - not. How very "Christian" of him.

The "religious" right are not religious, and they don't give a damn about Christ's teachings - all that helping the poor and loving thy neighbor even if he's different than you crap. No, they love the rich, hate the poor, and despise anyone who's different. They are some sick cousin to the equally deranged "religious" terrorists over in the Mid East, just with less focus on physical violence and more on economic violence. But the motivation is the same - anyone who's different than me or doing something I wouldn't enjoy should be punished through abuse of government power. And then they claim to support "small government" - ha! Yeah, small enough that the roads can't be paved or the schools funded, but large enough to monitor the bedrooms and temples for the "wrong" kind of sex or religion. Hypocrites.

For those who are truly interested in this question and not merely slinging attacks, check out the book "The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided By Politics And Religion" by Jonathan Haidt. Choices and judgments tend to come not from moral reasoning but from how issues make us *feel* (especially about ourselves, but also how we view others and their choices).

Not sure if anyone here will bother to make it a reasonable discussion (politics is mostly fear, manipulation of power, bullying and money--not practical reasoning), but this book does help one to see how each side has "correct" views but fail to gain support in making genuine progress.

Why do these people think they claim the moral high ground, that they are the true "peacemakers". Who gave them that role?
Because people on the Left think they own EVERYTHING. They appropriate anything and everything they can get their hands on. That includes property, wealth, entertainment, political power, art, ... you name it.

They're the greediest people you'll ever meet.

Literally every non psychopathic person on the planet believes they occupy the moral high ground... if they did not think they did, then why would they believe what they believe?

Think about it: Why would a normal person choose to hold a belief that they themselves thought was morally reprehensible? Hell the mere act of criticizing someone else for holding some perceived moral high ground in and of itself implies the person doing the criticism thinks that THEY hold the moral high ground.... otherwise, on what grounds can they level criticism? It is a near tautology, like saying water is wet.

This is why we need to give credit to Mormons who actually stuck to their religious values and voted their own candidate although he only got half a million votes.
