Most of the Confederate soldiers didn't own slaves. They were too poor. It was a rich man's war and a poor man's fight.
Those enslaved either outnumbered or nearly outnumbered those free depending on the slave-holding state. Confederate soldiers were fighting to continue the enslavement.

Lincoln came around to leniency because he was wise enough to realize the long term damage a harsh punishment would cause. If the US were to continue as a single nation, it was better for everyone to proceed in a way that would minimize long term resentment.
There is a reason why he pardoned the confederate soldiers.

I never said they should not have been pardoned.
They were pardoned & then dishonored themselves for a century after. Even now some are attempting to defend.
I think the confederate flag is indeed a symbol of a culture and a heritage. But that culture was one that was built on the backs of slaves. So yes, even if the people flying the flag are not thinking about it, I believe the confederate flag is a symbol of support for slavery, and therefore racist. I think it belongs in museums, as it is a fact of history. But it should be flown over no government building and no institution that is supported by the government. And if a private citizen wants to fly it, I think is is legal to do it, as we have freedom of expression in this country. But if you do fly it, know that you are advertising yourself as one who supports the culture of slavery and the heritage of racism and violence against non-whites.
2 Pardons were issued one by Lincoln in 1863 and 1 by Johnson in 1865. The second made it mandatory for an oath and if those that were pardoned in 1863 continued to fight were ineligible for the 2nd. As well as those who had over 20K in property were not eligible.
well, some people who fly the flag are racists, some are not. bold makes no sense. I assume the confederate soldiers were born in the 1863 to 1866 range.
If the claim is 'this is our heritage' it does not have to be those individuals who actually fought, some claim white supremacy as their inheritance, their birthright, a noble legacy, it's nauseating.
