Oh, please. Offices have been making rules about parties and about conduct in office since we've had offices. The OFFENSE you are taking because an office printed a memo stating the rules is the whiny bs.
And so in the end, we can all agree that "avoidance of OFFENSE" is the goal. Because Americans have become a bunch of soft ******* OFFENDED by everything.
I say whatever I please, including using the "n" word with co-workers which is routinely done in my department in a joking context. Too many snowflake groups these days that think their preferences must be appeased. I'll do what I want, you do what you want, I'll say what I want, and if you don't like it, too damn bad. Of course when at a corporation you are obligated to abide by the rules their gestapo come up with. Same with this particular college. You can choose to follow the rules or not. Accept the potential consequences of not following the rules, of course.
I'll keep my good paying job - thank you very much and language like that will get you escorted out the door so fast it will make your head spin.

There is a war on Christmas... it's real! But what most people don't seem to realize it's a war of aggression started by Christmas. First Christmas annexed part of the Thanksgiving holiday by taking black Friday as its own. Then it stole the end of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade by sending general Santa Claus to chase the parade away. Now it's nearly in direct conflict with Halloween. There was even a battle, lost by the famous Halloween general Jack Skellington! There is a war on Christmas, but Christmas seems to be winning as it went from being 12 days in December starting on the 25th to the entire months of November and December and maybe now October.
Okay, I know this is a joke. But the letter was debunked earlier in the thread too. So I figured I would join the fun. Everyone needs to lighten up a bit.
On a serious note, Christmas used to be banned in America as "unChristian." I sometimes wonder how many people go to church on Christmas. I always do (usually at midnight) but in my own circle of family and friends, with the exception of one couple, the ones who seem to cry the most about the war on Christmas seem to be the ones who don't even go to church or practice any kind of Christianity. They seem to only participate in the commercial and secular parts of the holiday. It's a bit baffling to my why they would even be upset. Maybe because they don't participate in the religious aspects of it, they don't see the whole, rich picture of what goes on from the start of Advent to the Epiphany.
Christmas as we know it today is actually a pretty recent thing. Read up on the history of Christmas, it's interesting. Personally, as it is now, it's my favorite holiday! I love it. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas (even if they don't do anything special on that day).

Just like Christians don't like when someone offends their religious beliefs, as evidenced in their response with their feeling like there is a perceived "War on Christmas".
Just because Christians are in the majority doesn't mean the whole country caters to them and their beliefs.
And besides, "avoidance of OFFENSE" should be the goal when dealing with customers, because the customer is always right.

Pay attention. I'm an atheist that enjoys secular Christmas celebrations because it's part of our culture and history in this country and because it's FUN.
You little ******* getting all upset and offended because someone misgendered your cat when inviting you and the "fur babies" to the company Christmas party when it should be labeled a "non-denominational end of year winter get-together" suck the joy out of life.
Just a collection of awful neck beards and killjoys.

For the last god-damned time: YOUR BELIEFS are not being INFRINGED UPON when a company, a store, or even the government says, "Merry Christmas" or chooses to recognize a particular holiday.
You can complain that your *own* beliefs or holidays are not celebrated or recognized, but that's different than saying your beliefs are OFFENDED by someone else recognizing and celebrating a holiday that you don't celebrate.
If you're forced to say a prayer to a god you don't believe in, or if you're forced to worship... THAT is offending someone's religion or beliefs (or lack thereof). It is NOT offensive to just SEE Christmas decorations or going to a "Christmas" party in the workplace, as long as it doesn't involve praying to baby Jesus.
If you worship Odin or celebrate Diwali, and are the only one in the office that does so.... how about working with management to maybe set aside an afternoon or lunch time where you can share your own traditions? Rather than making things boring and awful for the NINETY TWO PERCENT of Americans who DO celebrate Christmas in some form.
