Now adding to their initial closures announced last year.

Department stores are not WINNING.

Between Sears and Macy's I find it interesting that none of the stores identified are in the area I shop. The majority of the closures seem to be in less "booming" areas economically.

Guess you'll have to order that stove through Amazon!
It's a changing consumer base. Both Sear's and Macy's have been in decline for several years now.
It's just a matter of time before they close completely.

Lowes will be selling Craftsman tools. https://www.cnbc.com/2017/10/24/stan...ool-brand.html

Sears sold Craftsman to Black and Decker.

Convenience, cost, selection, ... all factor in.

Customer service is the only advantage physical stores have and Sears has been on a downward spiral in this area for some time.
"Customer service is the only advantage physical stores have"

Not the ONLY advantage.

I try on clothes before I buy them.

I will NOT order clothes on line.

I will NOT order large items like furniture either.

I want to sit in it to be sure it is comfortable for me.

I am NOT going to go to store after store to find the "right" mattress then ordering it on line.

It take too long and is a BIG HASSLE to return large items.

Do you think car dealerships will also die?

They sold off the Craftsman brand to Black and Decker some time back so I knew they wouldn't be around much longer.

I wonder if B & D will still have the lifetime warranty on Craftsman tools as Sear did?

The millennials, who are becoming the largest consumer base, do not like shopping in stores and prefer online including clothes and furniture.

I'm on your side though as I like to try on clothes before I buy them and sit on couches or inspect wood furniture before I buy.

But the new generation of spenders aren't like that and that will lead to many more closings.

Amazon is killing brick and mortar. In other news, fire is hot.

The retail shutdowns have nothing to do with Trump.

Of course not. But a boom would, correct?

But a boom would certainly be attributed to him, correct?

The last time I went into a Sears store was over a year ago. The store has not kept up with the times at all. Example, my washer went out and the old one was a Kenmore. I wanted to get another one. The salesman showed me exactly what I wanted and I said I would take it. The salesman said they would set up a delivery date, which was about two weeks later. I asked if they had another one in stock that I could take. They said yes, so I said I would take that one. I wanted to load it into my truck and take it home. They informed me that only deliver appliances, you cannot just load them into your truck. That is a deal killer.

Do you really think there will be a "boom" in brick and mortar stores which have been in decline for years now ?

It's changing consumer buying habits that is doing this, not politics and not who is sitting in the Oval Office.
