Common sense is uncommon in DC. It would be worth the initial expense to make them more efficient. God forbid they actually serve Americans. No more fancy DC cocktail parties.
The overhaul would be the largest undertaking in the Department of the Interior’s (DOI) 168-year history. Zinke’s plan divides the U.S. into 13 regions and moves bureau headquarters into the heart of each. The moves would improve Americans’ access to government officials, especially in the West, and make Interior more cohesive as a whole.
The BLM already has 12 state offices and a similar number of district offices. The Forest Service has 9 regional offices. It’s not like the whole Interior Department is administered from Washington.

Then the move won't be a problem. It nearly solves itself.
Until you realize some of those people stationed in DC frequently report to Congress or the department secretary. And rarely if ever have reason to be in the field out west as they are strictly administrative or other office jobs. And then add in the moving costs, homes being dumped on the market en masse disrupting the local economy in the DC area, their actual jobs not getting done while moving the offices, etc.
Then the move won't be a problem. It nearly solves itself.
I can't speak to the interior department but the forest service regional offices (USDA not interior) couldn't handle this massive influx of personnel. You're talking leasing or building new office space in multiple locations around the country to replace what is contained in DC. It's going to be a massively expensive boondoggle.

What is the cost to lease office space in DC? It can't be cheap.

Meh, companies do this all the time. Why should I feel sorry for some government official who wants to stay all nice and comfy in his or her government cocoon?
