My first reaction was that the Democrats folded completely and got nothing in return. On second thought, they got 6 years funding for CHIP, which impacts more people than DACA. That is a huge win for poor children.
Regarding DACA, Trump has said Congress has until March to address it. So maybe there will be a deal before then. If not, what do you think will happen? I find it highly unlikely that hundreds of thousands of "dreamers" are going to be rounded up and....and what, exactly? They would be referred to the Immigration Court system, which already has a backlog of ~500,000 cases. I doubt most would be held in jail pending their hearings. For most the process will drag on for years and years, while the dreamers remain in limbo, just like they did under DACA.
CHIP was never in any danger of losing permanent funding. The GOP has not demanded the end of the program. So nothing.
You're right hundred of thousands of DREAMers will not be rounded up. They won't even lose their status their work permit expire on a rolling 2 year basis. Even if a DACA work permit expires they are at risk of deportation but they have to be caught first. Most will just melt into the shadows as they did before DACA.
I'm not surprised Democrats folded rather quickly. I thought no way in heck the Democrats would ever use illegal immigrates to shut down the goverment. I mean, who could possibly be this stupid?
Let's see if it can be converted into a win for America: get immigration reform passed. Republicans will need cooperation in both houses because some of them will say no. So the Democrats have leverage. But so do the Republicans: no reform, no DACA. This is good because it means compromise is the only way out.
Here's the problem GOP is perfectly content to not do anything. There is no impetus for them doing anything. The GOP base doesn't demand it, quite the opposite actually. So in order for the GOP to be brought to the table and get a vote they need stuff in exchange. Hence the Wall, border security, immigration restrictions etc.
What changed from Chuck Schumer and the Dems from Friday night until today?
One thing.
They finally learned how to put down the shovel.
All this does is punt the real issues three weeks down the road. We'll be right back here really, really soon. What is interesting to me is once the GOP leadership put Donny in timeout and told him not to come out, progress was made. Trump was never & could never be a constructive voice to these efforts because he knows nothing about any of the policies to take a firm position.
Actually the other side of this...If Democrats got CHIP, and a promise to do something with DACA.....did they fund the wall at all? In fact...did the Republicans get anything?
By the way, the appropriation bills require 60 votes, the same as a cloture vote to end a filibuster. The CR only requires 51 votes, but was being held up by Schumer with a filibuster. It was a Schumer Shutdown after all.
Last I checked, the Rs have 51 votes in the Senate.

Those House bills are DOA. If leadership can't negotiate a workable budget, then they're not going to get one passed. Republicans aren't very good at governing, so they haven't successfully passed a budget since December 2015, when they negotiated a 2016 budget with President Obama & minority leaders Nancy Pelosi & Charles Shumer. They have yet to successfully negotiate a budget with President Trump & minority leaders Nancy Pelosi & Charles Shumer.

They don't have a super majority, which means they can't pass laws as if they had a super majority. But as the majority party, they are responsible for the basic functions of government.

Chuck got CHIP & a DACA vote for two and a half weeks of government operation.
Good for the Democrats. One party had to do something to end the stalemate. I don't see it so much as "caving" but as recognizing that the Country needed to move forward.

They wouldn't be deported unless they comitted a crime. Not committing crimes was part of the DACA memo anyway. So nothing changes other than in 2 years they'll lose status. The Democrats have them believing Trump is going to deport them.
democrats know that theres elections coming up and they will lose dearly.
They're basically putting themselves in a position where they're never going to win the senate. Their views are so far out of touch with the entire middle of the country. Where have the blue dog democrats gone!?
