Most communities have a farmer market open April thru Oct. He could have came up with mandatory snap $$$ used there instead for a portion each month.

I cannot believe this box idea was even suggested. Who came up with it? In particular, the food contents?

The cost to the government is $7. It’s public information and on Google.

Lol... where are all the conservatives who were absolutely livid about Michelle Obama trying to tell Americans what they can eat at school?

This is a great idea. Lot cheaper, too. I remember those blocks of cheese. Do we have food surpluses stored in warehouses? I think that was the case with the cheese before. Waste not, want not.

I could see perhaps adding a similar amount as a bonus for people who buy local produce, though, to encourage healthier eating habits.
A lot of farmer's markets in cities are actually more expensive than the supermarket. That's why I don't bother although there is one within walking distance. It's a 'scene' for the cool, hipsters and celebs. (yawn)

Maybe have a separate EBT card or coupon to be used for fruits and veg only.

I'm sorry yours is like that. Most of the ones I have gone to have not been.

As I was reading the first few pages, I was wondering why you couldn't ban soft drinks from food stamp purchases. I'm OK with that. Then that does raise the question of whether you ban tea, too. Do you ban the tea mix? Do you ban sugar? Coffee? I'm not on food stamps, but I am diabetic. One of the things I like but is actually bad for me is apple juice. Maybe we should ban apple juice, too.

Then my snarky side said if Trump is behind this, he'd probably allow food stamps to be used at McDonalds. Because if there's one person I want to tell me how to eat, it's Donald Trump.

Like I said, not a fan of any of these bans, for the reasons you have mentioned. But if it would satisfy (and finally shut up) people who have their knickers in a twist over soda, it would be a better idea than this Trump Train wreck.

Agreed. Less soft drinks for anyone is a good thing.
