They just keep the bad guys with guns out. Just like at the airport. Just like at the Masters Golf Tournament and many other places. Why not schools? We don't need new laws to protect our children. But the gun haters would rather cast blame and sensationalize the issue than actually take action to protect our children.
------------
An odd thing has happened. Advocates for gun control have actually begun arguing against practical measures addressing school security. Rather than take strategies that can be implemented virtually immediately, and which address the dangers in a specific place in a common-sense way, gun control advocates would rather focus on a political victory at some point in the future and continue to leave schools without proper security measures.
I guess it would be very costly and time consuming to implement property security measures at schools. Not to mention the legions of Soccer Moms and Arrogant Dads who could not be bothered to show ID or walk through a metal detector.
Alternatives?
We could try to ban and confiscate most if not all firearms.
Locking up all the crazy people would cost much more than security scanners. There are millions of crazy people in this country. Just look at all of the violent protesters.
And who gets to decide who the crazy people are? Me? You?

My response is best read with a veneer of fatalism.
There are about 100,000 public schools in the US. Some of them employ one or more of the following security measures:
Single point of entry
Penetration resistant doors
Armed Resource Officer (s) inside and/ or outside the school
ID card entry
Metal detectors
Wands
Surveillance Cameras
Face Recognition Cameras
Resistent glass
Bomb- sniffing dogs
Safety- shields
Random locker searches
Active shooter drills
All it takes is a state/ district willingness to fund it via taxation.
Because Disneyland charges $135 per adult on a peak admission day.
Normal days they charge $117.
Schools spend an average of around $70 per student per day.
But the comparison is flawed. Disneyland averages 44,000 per day. K - 12 schools average 50 million per day.
Spreading the cost of security scanners over 50,000,000 is much cheaper than 44,000.
