I think they got about 57,000 in this amnesty program. They destroyed about a million guns during the buyback phase back in the late 90's. Of course you are never going to get every gun, that would be unrealistic. But a $280,000 fine and 14 years in jail is a pretty strong motivator to comply. Plus, most people want to be law abiding.
Actually, most Americans want to be free. And not fear a tyrannical government. Or those that DON'T want to be law abiding and want to do them harm.
And please tell me how a huge fine and 14 years in jail would have stopped the most recent school attacks?

Mass shootings (5 or more victims) were zero since Port Arthur. Gun homicides are down as are suicides. Seems like some pretty selective years for suicide. So 6 beatings over 20 years or 6 vehicle homicides, that makes your case, seriously. Sure sounds like they started reporting things differently over time,
There are only 2 words that have ingrained all forms of weaponry into the minds of free Americans that will never be bullied or victimized by anyone, including government.

That just goes to show that it can be done, and the doom and gloom that gun huggers predict doesn't happen. A lot of Americans are simply obsessed with guns, and have enjoyed the ability to buy just about any type of weapon their little hearts desired for way too long. We are seeing the results right now of that cowboy of the old west mentality.
Not sure what the outcome of this will all be, but it looks like enough Americans have had it that some good changes are heading our way. Now, if we can get our legislators (who are beholding to the NRA) to get off their butts, we might see similar results to what Australia has seen.
I agree with most of what you are saying, but I also agree with those who point out the value of our 2nd amendment.
We need to keep The Second, and We, The People, need a little more freedom to carry while forfeiting the freedom to own semi-automatic weapons capable of killing an classroom full of kids in a few seconds.
It's a trade off. We get to carry in more places, but we don't get to carry crowd killers.
But, yeah. I'm a conservative Trump supporter, but I've had enough. I'm never going to actually vote for a Democrat, but I wish them well in this case.

Actually it is 4 or more victims.
They raised it to 6 to make an illusion the mass killings decreased.
People here are NOT going to disarm. I do not own a gun but if I did, I would not turn it in.
They clearly didn't in Australia either. This is the fourth time they've done an amnesty to try and get people to turn them in and they're STILL getting a few fools to do it, probably turning in the guns they broke since the last amnesty.
Americans won't even register their guns when liberal governments demand it, they sure aren't going to hand them over.
So 22 knife killings is significant over 22 years, even assuming they were consistent in tracking.
