Well $50 or $100 hour would be nice , but then thing is all those places employing those people would go out of business then everyone will be making zero per hour including the business owner .
Business aren’t like the government where they can just print more money and spend what they want .
Labor is just one of many many costs of running a business .
Yes, labor is just one of many, many costs, so the scaremongering about skyrocketing prices if one of those many costs increase is deceptive. And they try to keep the wages as low as possible and threaten the workers if they dont comply.
Nobody has said $100 an hour is reasonable but is $11.67 an hour for ambulance drivers and $12.50 for bakers reasonable? All hell brakes lose if they get a living wage?
Who would be serving us our food if all these people left?
Even at $15 an hour, these employees will only make $30,000 a year, forcing them into the outer boroughs.
We'd still need to tip these employees because how on earth will they be able to smile and joke with us as they serve us while they can barely afford to eat?
Until automation really takes over, restaurant workers are vital to the success of the business. They deserve to get what they can while they can.
Well we know they won't all leave. Obviously they are still able to survive even though they aren't being paid $15 , like you pointed out at $15hr they still can't really afford to live in the NYC area comfortably.
Plus employers are going to cut back hours if they haven't already , so they might make $15 hr, but overall make the same or even less all together...unless they get another job.
Don't you think it's strange to sign up for a job at one wage and then they you demand more after accepting and working in the job?
Pay should be between the worker and the employee , not a third party (government)

I also question the automation scaremongering, as the restaurant industry is a people business. Machines are far from replicating human interaction and that will be the situation for quite some time to come.
It's really messing with the manufacturing industry.. Oh well... let them move production to Malaysia if they can't pay $15 hr here right..better for Americans to lose their jobs I guess..
This is just the beginning folks..
" Some manufacturers have taken drastic actions in the wake of the wage hike.
Framerica, a picture-frame manufacturer in Yaphank, canceled $3 million in building plans and equipment purchases. Uncle Wally’s, a Shirley-based muffin maker, won $1 million in tax breaks after threatening to lay off one quarter of its workforce. And Chembio Diagnostics, a medical device company with operations in Medford and Holbrook, said it will shift some production to a plant in Malaysia because of the rising minimum wage."

There is such a vast difference in power between a worker and the employer that no regulations, including allowing child labor, will only lead to misery and despair for the masses of workers. Your agenda was tried in the 19th century and it lead to worker revolts and could have led to communism! I think some with your point of view are secretly communists, as the best way to rile up the masses into a communist revolution has historically been to push workers to the breaking point.

Let them leave if they cant figure out how to run a businesss while paying a living wage. Others can apparently as the unemployment rate in New York is low.

No minimum wage means that we are going to start allowing child labor? Two different topics.

Yeah just let them all leave. The min wage isn't $15 in NYC..yet.
You think it's going to be attractive to open a business in NYC with $15hr min wages?
We'll see...it'll be an interesting and risky experiment with the economy.

Secretly a communist
Oh ok... you got me!
The "no regulation" crowd definitely harbors communists. If you want a communist revolution, the best way is to push the workers to the breaking point. This has been proven time and time again historically. So it makes perfect sense for communists to agree with you.

Like GothereasquickasIcould said, we're subsidizing these employees wages.
How does a restaurant cut back hours without hurting their business. It's a stupid claim that keeps being repeated.
Would you prefer to work 40 hours a week at $10 an hour, or have your hours cut to 25 per week, and make the exact same thing?
