Public opinion is there. This is something people really want, especially those on he left side of the political spectrum. 61% of Americans favor recreational legalization and over 90% favor at least medical. The only demographic in America still overwhelmingly opposed to legalizing marijuana is white evangelicals.
However, establishment Democrats have been slow to board the legal marijuana train or have been at best passively supportive on the subject eg. Obama. Republicans on the other hand will continue to fight legalization tooth and nail because of the religious right as well as big money from special interests like Big Pharma and private prisons. I think the time is right that if the Democrats were to fully embrace legalization and push for it, it would be politically beneficial to them. What do you think?

Interesting distinction you made between the democrats and republicans. I swear you make it sound like only republicans accept money from lobbyists in order to keep it illegal for as long as possible.
Hardly. BOTH sides have been bought by the lobbyists on this issue. It has been that way for many, many years. There is so much money involved with what I am talking about that the democrat/republican part of the equation is all but irrelevant.
To answer your question: Of course it would be a good idea for the democrats to officially embrace marijuana legalization. But never forget to always follow the money. Money trumps good ideas, every time.
Eventually the voting public will make this a moot point anyway. But we are not there yet. It is still very possible for prohibitionists to get elected to office.
Im not sure about this, Obama was president and the dems controlled both houses back in 2012, when Govt cracked down on opioid prescription drugs, these new laws were extremely tough and far reaching. Pretty strange imo that such a thing happened under Obama and a liberal controlled govt...??
Besides that, if its really all about the money...they kind of screwed themselves with those laws, opioids were flying off the shelves before the laws took effect, meaning lots of money was being made from them, insurance companies loved them because they were the cheapest treatment option, pharma loved them because they were cheap and easy to produce too.

Well, the problem is that they did not control both houses in 2012.
I suppose they could have done it in 2009 when they did control both houses, but it was a hectic year with ACA and the recession. Not sure if they had legalized it even if it had been a normal year. It is considered a low priority issue among more voting population. Even the evangelicals don't consider opposing it a high priority. I have never heard it mentioned in church.
If it was considered a high priority issue, they definitely would use it during their 2018 campaign, but it not happening.

Thats because he has to answer to the drug cartels, naturally they would not be happy if the US started down the legalization road, heck we have a federal agency to ensure the business climate in the US remains as profitable as it can be for the cartels, this is what the DEA does.

Big pharma was screwed by govt too when they regulated opioids to the point where they are almost impossible to get from any doctor! Before these laws, opioids were flying off the shelves, lots of people were making lots of money, the pills were selling on the street for 100X and up of the retail price.
Of course, the drug cartels were loosing out on this, addicts were going to doctors instead of dealers, thankfully the cartels had Jeff Sessions and the DEA to kill the competition for them!
Actually, it's be a good idea for everybody to officially embrace marijuana legalization. And there's a strong argument to be made for all drugs to be legalized. I think we can all agree that the War on Drugs has been an epic fail. To quote The Onion, drugs won the Drug War
