FY19 Defense Authorization Bill Passes Congress in Record Speed

The Department of Defense applauds the passage of the Fiscal Year 2019 National Defense Authorization Act at the swiftest pace in 20 years. This year's bill passed with overwhelmingly bipartisan support - a vote of 87-10 in the Senate and 359-54 in the House.

The FY19 NDAA authorizes a $717 billion national defense budget that rebuilds our military, increases lethality, strengthens our alliances and partnerships and reforms the way we do business.

It raises service member pay by 2.6% - the highest in 9 years.

This is the exception where I can handle more spending - as long as it's not frivolous and wasteful. I understand everyone's opinion is different as to what is wasteful.

$717 billion.......wow

They could pay them decent salaries if they cut the spending in other military expenditures. $717 billion is ridiculously high.

Good lord, that is a lot of money. Glad to see that troops are receiving a hefty pay raise.

Contrary to what politicians on both sides of the aisle would tell us, I believe that just about every American citizen supports and appreciates our military members.

this is not the point; the point is: they are getting a raise and I am sure that makes them all happy. I only wish the raise was even higher, but maybe in time. And we do no have to cut military spending to give our service men and women a decent salary.

We have to cut spending because we don't have the money to spend. Giving the troops a raise is fine, but there are many other areas where we can cut.

Not when tied to GDP. $717b is around 3.8% GDP, well in-line with many countries around the world.

No, not many. Only 3 countries spend more as % pf GDP, not to mention the fact that we could have by far the strongest military in the world with much less money due to the size of our economy.

Taxation is theft.

That's $717 billion that was stolen from the income of American workers and business owners--money that could have been invested in the economy.
