Many European immigrants have entered USA taking advantage of their Visa free status upto 90 das. But then they overstay with their relatives and work illegally until they get legal status such as by marriage, or by green card lottery. Many Ireland immigrants are in Chicago.

According to Homeland Security's figures, there are no European countries in the top 10 list of countries of origin of illegal immigrants.

#1 should come as no surprise: Mexico, comprising 55% of total illegal immigrants in the US.

  1. Mexico (55%)
  2. El Salvador (6%)
  3. Guatemala (5%)
  4. India (4%)
  5. Honduras (3%)
  6. Philippines (3%)
  7. China (2%)
  8. Korea (2%)
  9. Vietnam (1%)
  10. Dominican Republic (1%)
Illegal Europeans fall into the "other" category as well as any illegal NOT from the 10 countries listed above. Every other country on earth comprises 17% of the total, and no one country has more than 180k in raw numbers or 1% of the estimated total number of illegal immigrants.

https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/fi...y%202014_1.pdf

According to this set of statistics, illegal immigrants from Europe, Canada, and Oceania combined comprise 5% of the total of illegal immigrants in the US:

https://www.migrationpolicy.org/data...ation/state/US

Asia (which obviously includes India) comprises 16%.

Illegal immigration by anyone from anywhere is an issue, but let's focus on the nations most to blame for our problem (the 10 listed above). People from these countries who are here illegally are overwhelmingly more likely to be low-skilled, low-English proficient, poorly educated, and a burden on social services.

Thanks for the data. I figured Europe would be lower on list but still thought it'd be a little higher than that. Esp. Ireland, which I always thought had a ton of illegals in the US from news reports.

Illegal work is so complicated that it is difficult for any Data to capture.

There are immigrants who are legally in USA but working illegally as their Visa conditions do not permit them to work.

People entering USA on Tourist visa sometimes work illegally for their 6 month duration even though they are forbidden to work. People on dependent visa on H-1B, people on F-1 student visa work for cash in ethnic restaurants, stores like 7-eleven despite forbidden to work. On data of DHS, they are all legal.

well, this thread devolved far from where it started. Btu once again nice to see Trump tweet out more ramblings, this time totally betraying his stance on this issue.....seems about right....never knew Tata and the like were part of keeping America great....lesson learned....
Mexican and Central American immigrants doing jobs nobody else wants = bad. Un or under qualified Indian programmers taking good white collar middle and upper middle class jobs from Americans and depressing wages overall in the industry = good; and now he wants to make it easier for them to be citizens....

H1-B holders in the United States can rest assured that changes are soon coming which will bring both simplicity and certainty to your stay, including a potential path to citizenship. We want to encourage talented and highly skilled people to pursue career options in the U.S.

His Tweet !!!
This is actually total betrayal of all American Workers who voted for him expecting him to put an end to visa abuse. This path to citizenship will encourage more abuse of H-1B visa.

There is no program reflecting the power and influence of the establishment more than the H1-B program. The establishment got to him.

I would like to clarify this a little.

right now, H1-b abuse happens because the people on H1-b can't switch employers and jobs very easily and are stuck with same employer. so, Employer might take advantage of that situation and pay peanuts.

If as of today, All H1-B holders get green cards, they are no longer stuck with same employer and wouldn't work for less pay. that means, employers will not have any advantage in hiring them.

New H1-bs will also be significantly lesser because eventually they will get GC and why would the employer want to go through all that paperwork and immigration? Employers prefer americans as there is no advantage in hiring H1-b anymore. I repeat hiring H1-bs is an advantage as they have no where to go with 40+ years of waiting of green card. If that changes, everyone will be happy except for the big IT companies.

Most the big IT companies wouldn't want this to happen and will oppose any immigration reform and Trump.

or the incentive of easier green card will increase numbers for program knowing end result is much more of a reality. Considering the artificial effect this program has on depressing wages in the industry not sure how this is a plus? Who cares if they don't have 40 years a slave when they can just cycle out over and over again with even more applicants flooding market (increasing supply and prob further depressing wages).

H1-b holder can not apply for green card, employer who sponsors H1-b will have to sponsor green card. so, NO - the incentive of easier green card will not increase numbers as employers wouldn't apply green card if the person would just resign after they got their green card.

I agree that they will cycle out every 6 years (H1-b max is 6 years without a green card application) but the abuse will be no more. more people will prefer americans rather than going through all the hoops and paperwork required for a H1-b. As H1-b guy also knows that his max term is 6 years, he will have more freedom to move around jobs and ask for more payrate rather than working as a slave.

If you want to get rid of legal immigration and H1-b then I dont know what to say but if you would like to see the removal of abuse and equal job oppurtunities to both americans and legal immigrants then what trump wants to do is the way to go.
