There were 3 AA women involved in Hidden Figures-out of some 400,000 people involved in the mission...
No, there were a whole team of black women working in that department. In the movie they showed a couple dozen, but in reality it was much larger.
They would double and triple check the mathematical calculations for various trajectories.
Hidden Figures wasnt a very historically accurate movie. The movie takes place in 1961, but all the departments were desegregated in 1957. The positions the women had werent entirely accurate either. The 3 main AA women did all have important positions and roles. Hidden Figures more or less compacts 4-5 years of work and change into 1961. They oversimplified what happened.
Not saying its a huge contribution, but dont try to diminish their roles.
I'm skeptical they left out the flag scene, the flag being motionless on the moon is a very well known image. I'll watch it regardless, but that'd be silly to say the least to leave out of the movie.
They can show the flag be raised. Just not make a big deal about it.
It was an American achievement. Not a Chinese, or Egyptian or Italian, or an Icelandic feat. It was an American achievement. Our flag belongs in any movie discussing the first man on the moon. It was a big deal.
As much as some might want to include the cubans, or Brazilians, or the polar bears, they had not a thing to do with it.
They should make a big deal out of planting the flag. The flag of the nation that achieved such a great thing.

Didn't your boy JFK say he wanted a man on the moon by the end of the decade and that was the inspiration for the mission?

For space science, like nuclear science and all technology, has no conscience of its own. Whether it will become a force for good or ill depends on man, and only if the United States occupies a position of pre-eminence can we help decide whether this new ocean will be a sea of peace or a new terrifying theater of war.
Does Hollywood have the ability to tell a story the way it happened without an agenda these days? I guess we will find out soon with this Ryan Gosling starred production.
Word is, they decided to not do a planting of the American flag scene because the movie producers have decided it was a human achievement more than an American one....even though it was our science and our money and our astronauts LOL.
So maybe that answers the question already. I can hardly wait to see the diverse mission control they will portray...or will they just cut those scenes out because it was 99% white males who ran this show.

What most don't realize is that our motivation was just to out do the Russians.
But the byproduct of it is that it brought about humanity's greatest achievement.
Also, glad you are here. Been meaning to ask you, could man have accomplished the level of space exploration that we've achieved today if it WASN'T for government? Or was government just a jump-start to get the private sector involved?

True, like I said, it should be shown. But not in a self gloating type of way.
All in all, it was proof that HUMANS made it. Once we leave the atmosphere, the importance becomes greater than one nation alone. Acknowledge the nation that did it but don't rub it in.

Don't know.
