The one fact that continuously get's overlooked is that we already have a pretty high degree of socialism intertwined into our modern economy. This isn't talked about much as it is painful for those who truly believe that we, in fact, do have a capitalist--market driven--economy. The federal government has a huge role in modern day America's financial health, Fed policies alone serve as a big clue to the fact of our shift to a capitalist/socialistic form. Hybrid economies seem to be the norm in most of the advanced nations but the stigma of words holds tight to the minds of the ill informed, many are confused about the terms, capitalism, socialism, communism, and the various degrees of state intervention in all of those constructs.
OK, finally you are ready to discuss policy. You are still stuck on the "everyone should have the same" tune, which no one is proposing here, but I'll ignore that.
Its great that you support a national health care system that ensures everyone has good health care regardless of ability to pay. This means you are a minority among your right wing friends, and that shows independent thinking.
Regarding your claim that everyone has a right to education including good quality higher education regardless of ability to pay, that's laughable and you know it.
Decent housing as a right for every American? We already have that? Subsidized housing, section 8 etc is not the same as every American having a right to decent housing. A person who is poor cant simply move into a decent home in a few weeks and sue the state and federal government if it is not provided.
Re Healthcare. I think a system like that in Switzerland, Singapore, or maybe Germany is worth talking about. What I do not want is something like the NHS in the UK or something crammed through Congress by one party. The problem is a good chunk of the country does not agree with that and has honest concerns which guys like you tend to dismiss with chants of Fox News or other mindless rants.
Re Education: You seem to be rather ignorant if not oblivious to the vast array of educational options in this nation. More than any other nation on Earth including your supposed Nordic paradises.
Re Decent Housing: I saved for a long time and worked very, very hard to purchase my very, very modest house. I forgo all kinds of things ( the aforementioned cable tv) to insure that I can keep it up. I made the effort. I did not demand it. If you cannot do the same, that is not my problem and you do not have a right to be given what I have earned.
Furthermore, whenever the government tries to give people housing you end up with either Projects/Section 8 or helping people buy houses they cannot afford and then lose later on.
Do you think Socialism would get you something akin to Bob Dylan's house in Malibu? Is Socialism going to make all those violent projects in the Bronx and Chicago transform into Pepperland? Please! Those projects are the result of massive state intervention and the squelching of incentive,

Well since you are supportive of the German national health care system but not of the Danish national health care system, you are indeed a supporter of health care as a right of every American. This shows a degree of independent thinking from you, where your right wing ideology spewed by the donor class is vehemently against this and constantly demonize it as socialism. I would appreciate if you would 1) Stop Lying and 2) Cease the obsession with Fox News. Not that it is any of your business, but I do not watch it and do not go to their website. I read the WSJ, National Review, Washington Post, the Economist, the Guardian and sometimes, if I am feeling ambitious, der Spiegel.
