The NYT has 2 classes of stock, A and B. A is publicly - traded and B is privately- held by the Ochs- Sulzberger family who acquired the NYT in the late 1800’s and has been the continuous publisher since then. Class B shares have controlled the majority of seats on the NYT Board for over 125 years.
Carlos Sims lent the NYT $250 million during the financial crisis. With a 17.4% stake, Sims became what was then the single largest shareholder of Class B shares.
The NYT repaid the loan in 2011. Sims sold half his stock at a swell profit.
BlackRock Investment Mgt has been the single largest shareholder of Class A stock for the past 9 years. No connection to Sorros.
