Speaking as an independent centrist who's not from Texas, has no particular liking of Cruz, and detests Trump, I couldn't agree with you more. I have little doubt that the video of this confrontation is going to make its way into political advertising for Cruz and will cost O'Rourke more than a few votes. Yeah, that footage will play really well in Texas.

A poster referred to these people as an angry mob...obviously it was a gross exaggeration. It also happened on Cruz's way out, not during his meal, according to the way it was reported.
According to the group responsible, they are claiming they interrupted his meal.
