First off the troops are undergoing training on their way there with DHS/ICE.
Secondly their deployment is meant to be a deterrent. Deploying them will encourage these idiots to go home.

Idiots to go home? People do not risk their lives and uproot their families to walk thousands of miles because they had nothing else to do. Anyone that believes that is the real idiot.
It is probably a bluff and it's a good one. Maybe 1/2 of the people turn back if they get this message.
They will probably use force, but not deadly force, to keep this mob out.

Plastic Bullets, Tear Gas and Water Cannon are the usual non-lethals used against rioters and rock throwers and not bullets.
The US Army will be in protective kit and in armoured vehicles so rock throwing or even Molotov cocktails (petrol bombs) would achieve very little.
Nobosy want this to tur in to an Orangeburg, Kent State or Bloody Sunday type tragedy.
