I don't drink (used to do so, but cant because of a medical condition)or smoke pot. However, I think that people should have a right to do so, if they are of age and stay at home when they do it.
Does alcohol and pot reduce the productivity of the users? Of course- both impair judgement and motor skills and are sedative hypnotics. People who claim they are more productive while using alcohol or pot are somewhat delusional, as people under the influence of sedative hypnotics are rarely in a position to provide insight about their behavior while under the influence.
Banning controlled substances:
1. increases the cost
2. increases the probability that criminal elements will be become involved
3. does not eliminate use/consumption of those substances
Legalizing controlled substances:
1. increases federal revenues from taxation
2. lowers prices
3. reduces or eliminates the involvement of organized criminals in the production and distribution, thus reducing drug related crime
4.increases health related costs and consequences of the use of the drug in question
5. reduces productivity of those using the drugs
Society has to ask what it wants. One does not become a better parent/citizen/employee by being stoned or drunk all the time, but I would assume that episodic consumption does not have deleterious effects with regard to the individual or society. However, society does not improve by providing a very lucrative business to criminal elements.
