I read and understand French and it's not clear what's going on. It seems to me to be a protest everyone is supporting left/center/right. As always the left and the right are trying to hijack their movement but are not doing a very good job at it. People are calling for revolution, and left/right groups want to get on top of it for 'damage control' and go back to business as usual. Which is what they do in every country: divide the people to argue about nonsense while rich people can continue to take all the money.

They don't hate "socialism", they want to KEEP it. What Macron is been trying to do is dismantling their welfare system. Incredible how people completely distort things to push their biases!

How does raising the petrol tax equate to the dismantling of the French welfare system?

I edited my comment, but to answer your question Macron has been going after workers rights and civil rights in general. Higher petrol taxes affects working people the most. It was just the tipping point, it is not the main cause of the protests.
While people in the US continue to drum the same BS: left vs right. France is calling it for what it is: rich vs poor. Most poor countries know this; despite the news not reporting what this is about this will likely spread. This is one of the few reports on the issue:
So you agree that the politicians specifically stated that an increase in fuel would reduce gasoline usage and therefore help the environment as people shifted to mass transit and more green sources...but you just doubt their sincerity and think it was 100% about paying for their bloated and not fully solvent social programs?
Ya, restrict or over tax resources and see if your State comes to a halt in economic production.
When more work and higher wages are needed to make up the added cost, put people out of work and see how that turns out.
