You say this, but how does one live within their means when their means won't afford both food and shelter; just be working homeless?
Pool resources with others in the same situation, as has been done since time immemorial. Have you forgotten that entire families would live in a walk up that didn't even have a bath or shower? That was a shared common facility in the boarding house.

It's reality. If you find it "sickening," perhaps you should be changing the fact that the US currently subsidizes the growth of the welfare-dependent class to the detriment of everyone else.
