Why should Trump get money for a wall that has not been subjected to a feasibility study or cost-benefit analysis? Just because Trump claims a wall will be effective? He also claimed Mexico would pay for it and we saw how that went when push came to shove.

Trump's bargaining position would be much improved if he had a specific plan with an accompanying unbiased study explaining why its needed/effective. At this point, he has nothing more than a handful of wall prototypes that he keeps oscillating between.

Imagine your teenage son or daughter told you that they needed $5,000 to get started on a really great idea to help secure your home from raccoons - a barrier. Would you ask things like "where is this barrier going to be?", and "how effective will it be against stopping raccoons?", "are there better, cheaper ways to stop the raccoons?", "how much, in total, will it cost?" and "how long will it take to build?" or would you just hand him or her a stack of hundreds?

face it, there are going to have to be some concessions on the wall funding.

While I don't believe Federal workers are living paycheck to paycheck, most can't continue to go without pay for months, especially if they are working and not getting paid. Your going to start to run into situations were they call out sick or don't show up to work at all. With no TSA workers, no one get though airport security, with no air traffic controllers, planes can't fly, etc. While they claim Social Security checks will still be send out as normal, if your not going to get paid, are you really going to show up to work to get the checks out on time? Also no new claims can be processed, so no one else can retire, the list goes on and on.

Once this happens, I see this as the death blow to the Trump presidency, once congress realizes they can get stuff down without the president, they will simply bypass him to get legislation done.
I think the likelihood of this happening increases with every passing day. Eventually, the shutdown will start to have a real impact on people who do not work for the government, and that's when things will get interesting. I could be wrong, but IMO, that's when Trump will find out just how many enemies he has made within his own party.

There never was any presidential 'cognitive association' with pros/cons- especially financially, for this wall. In fact, his public statement that 'all immigrants are going to be deported' probably had more positive effect on border crossings than any wall would have. Once he took a hard line...illegal crossings dropped.

It was stated above that 2 years elapsed with no congressional consensus on wall funding...which is true. Apparently there are those that ran the numbers, considered the financial impact, and realized that there was no justification for additional expenditures that would put America even further into debt, beyond the 1 Trillion dollar tax cut did. Adding a 'Nuclear Option' to force additional debt was obviously a bad choice, and congress was smart enough to know it. It is only Trump- based on nothing more than his ingrained beliefs- that cares to ignore the complexity of the immigration situation on the ground. We need to think our way out of this mess, not waste precious financial resources trying to spend our way out of it.

The funny thing here, is that emotions always trump reasoning, and the effects of an effective, unified PR campaign could well have a larger impact on immigration than any wall can...at a fraction of the cost. But this requires smart, effective planning- something that is sorely missing from the political environment in Washington right now.
But no one in DC, Trump included, actually wants to stop illegal immigration. The wall is going to be ineffective in the grand scheme of stopping illegal immigrants from coming to the US, making it perfect for the GOP, who are beholden to their pro-illegal donor class. They can push to build a wall (or build it) to cater to and enamor their low-information base knowing full well that their donors will still be happy because it had no real impact on their businesses (which benefit from low wage immigrants). Its a win-win for them.

For Trump himself, there's an added bonus that he will get to slap his name on another gaudy structure.

If anyone wanted to stop illegal immigration, they would commission a study to determine what the best and most effective market-based solution to deal with the situation is, not rely on bumper-sticker sized solutions sprung from simplistic and emotion-fueled thinking.

And the Democrats took back the House - accept it.

Trump will actually work with Congress on the shutdown issues when/if Hannity tells him to in one of their late night phone chats.

Or Trump could deflect the whole thing by declaring war on N. Korea. Nothing serves to focus the will of the people like an imminent threat of nuclear annihilation.

"Trump doesn't seem to care about the plight of Federal workers."

But he does care about the American citizen, Legal immigrants and those that have suffered at the hands of illegal aliens.

It wasn't that long ago about 5 years when the top Dems including Obama himself were telling us how important border security was. What has changed? Are the Dems really that against common sense security at the border or do they hate Trump that much to spite everything he stands behind?

The Dems are playing politics with a secure America.

Very small.
Today's job numbers made that even less likely - there were far more jobs created in December than anyone expected. So Trump has little reason to budge and the Senate probably won't move, either. Meanwhile, Trump will push through judicial appointees as fast as he can.
