That influence grew stronger when I was diagnosed with stage IV cancer at 23. Here I was in the wealthiest country in the world with access to some of the best doctors in the world at one of the top 10 cancer centers in the world, and yet my insurance plan ensured that my treatment was far more expensive and far less effective than peers in Canada, Sweden, the UK, and Israel who received a superior chemotherapy at no-to-limited out of pocket cost to them with no questions asked and got it more than a month faster than I was able to get into treatment. I had done everything right - gone to college on a full scholarship, worked hard, saved - and yet when push came to shove, that was nothing compared to the cost of being sick in our country. And thank G-d my chemotherapy worked and I was able to work (thanks to overly generous employers since I had no legal protection) throughout treatment! There were no social safety nets for me, and that firmed my resolve that no one should be in that or a worse position simply because they get sick, or maybe because they're less intelligent or had less luck than me.
There are many examples like this.

The thing is that people that are in Love with socialism have very little real life experience.

Socialism is great until the people paying for it run out of money.
Can't believe you wrote this nonsense.

Millennials are nearing on 40 years old. Your tropes are about 10 years out of date.

Had I been in his same situation, I would have been a millionaire by the time he was complaining about how the system screwed him and begging for socialism to give him more free stuff. He obviously didn't have the ability to manage his money or his life, probably because he was used to having everything given to him.
I didn't graduate from college, started out working hard at menial jobs, working my way up the ladder and never complaining about the advantages others had. Working multiple jobs, saved every cent and invested it while making huge sacrifices along the way. I purchased my first home when I was 23 and single, the payments were more than I brought home each month, so I rented out rooms for a few years. I did whatever it took to survive and go foreword, hitchhiking to work, eating PB&J three meals a day, etc.

Even when I retired I was making just under 60k a year, but I made every dime count and my net worth today is in the millions, and with a handsome monthly income. I did all of that while living is Orange County CA, one of the most expensive areas in the state. Today I'm retired, living the good life with more money than I will ever spend.

I see a lot of losers like your friend, they made their own bed, he should have been wealthy by now but he failed in the common scene department.

So now we must resort to socialism because young people are clueless and afraid of hard work and sacrifice...?
I smell a Boomer, who walked ten miles up hill both ways in sub zero weather, or hitchhiked. He worked his way up the ladder, but there is no ladder for a substantial part of the population, certainly if you dont' have a degree, or the ladder is pulled from them and given to some cheaper foreigner or a robot. Bet Grumpy Grampy didn't have to deal with that.

I'm not sure how bragging about your easy situation, which wasn't a huge hardship to eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and be able to buy a house at 23, and affluence translates to anything but arrogant bragging that you got yours because of the times you lived in. You know things are very very different now and the numbers don't work as they used to.

This is exactly why millennials and gen Z are angry and want change. Insulting them only makes them want to screw with the current system failing them even more, enough to vote for things that might not be best for the country. See the hard left swing with the new democratic candidates? Thanks, boomers.

Just seeing how slowly things turned to turd. Seeing how other countries helped their people out, and wondering why the greatest country on earth cant adopt similar systems.

Im not advocating for full on socialism.

Just a foundation so no one ends up in the bedrock. You can still be poor as hell, but you wknt be homeless or starving.

From there on to make it upwards, you still gotta work for it. So thats when capitalism kicks in.

Basically, think of homelessness as being the badement, and being rich as the top suit. But the first floor is missing. Furst floor isnt all that great. Its still somewhat dirty and cramped. You dont get much down there. But your not in the basement. From there on you gotta climb the stairs to the top. You gotta work to get there.

But not only are they stairs, theyre an escalator that pushes you back down so you gotta still fight your way up.

But your no longer pushed into the basement and trapped down there.

This is the common perspective in our generation.

We've been a socialist leaning country for decades. How many Boomers are currently in favor of cutting Medicare and Social Security?

Those "Boomers" were FORCED to pay into both those programs. If they had been allowed to invest THEIR MONEY they would be much better off. So, you're wrong, that's not socialism., that is forced confiscation. That is their money, not the governments. Government makes no money of its own.

So why aren't they currently dismantling the programs now they are in charge?

Those who oppose such humane and moral solutions believe that if you were born in the basement, it's where you deserve to be. You get no help due to your birth condition, which you had no control over. If you are able to claw your way out of the basement good for you. But for those who are unable to overcome the unsurmountable odds of doing so, in a world that is increasingly stacked against you due to the hoarding of wealth by the top one percent, well, tough luck, baby. Should have been born into privilege.

If you are born wealthy, you deserve it, and you deserve to keep all your wealth to yourself and use your position of privilege to hoard even more wealth. And to stick it to the poor schlubs who weren't so lucky in the birth lottery.

Welcome to the right wing philosophy of life. I look forward to your generation moving us away from that disastrous and immoral philosophy in the near future. There are many of us here in the boomer generation who are rooting for you.

You are assuming that because he is barely keeping his head above the water that he must be blowing his money on pointless stuff. From my perspective he is managing his money extremely well, its just that the cost of living has gone up by wages have been stagnant.

Sorry to be mean but you are a nobody. A few million dollars in today's economy is nothing, not when your are competing with people whose net worth is 60 billion or 80 billion. Essentially you have no real economic or political power, no influence, nothing. All you have is enough to be content, and you are content because someone who was richer and smarter then you told you that you should be content. Like a little puppy dog you listened and obeyed. Sorry old man but you have been brainwashed your whole life.
