They should be independent.

Allow them to depart US control.

Oh pulleeze, don't imply PR is economically prosperous. Why did they have a power company with a crumbling power grid and $20 Billion in debt? Why is 1/3 of the population on food stamps? The median household income is less than $20k - they would be paying little or no federal income taxes even if they were added as a state. Meanwhile we pay $17B per year in welfare, $2B in food stamps. Not only that, they may redeem SNAP benefits as cash which is often not spent on food. They are a net negative economically.

How about we just add them to the federal tax dollars? Representation is not a required element of taxation.

We made it US territory, and then say "we don't need you". Weird way of thinking.

If we didn't need PR, then why make it US soil?

Do you know how many administrations ago that was? What happened to PR was wrong. We can break away from this country's colonial past by letting all those territories go.

You mean revoke citizenship from 4 million Americans? Should they revoke yours too while they are at it?

Must I point out that Puerto Rico’s debt to GDP ratio is lower than that of the U.S.? We actually come out ahead even after we take on their debt.

No, we don't. A corporation is not a good buy because it has high revenues if it is in deep debt and losing money. And PR is not a good acquisition because of it's GDP when it is a drain on social resources.

And to be accurate, their GDP is projected to be $105Billion next year and it has never been higher than that.

Does The U.S Need Another State?

No, and we didn't need to add Alaska and Hawaii either.

That's the thorny issue. As a sovereign country, they could not continue to have birthright citizenship. I would not "revoke" anyone's citizenship though. I would also end inherited citizenship unless one of the parents was permanently residing within the USA. It would be a legal mess.
