There are some people who can't handle a shotgun's recoil.

Many women especially.

For them, an AR-15 or other similar weapon chambered in 5.56/223 or other light recoiling round makes a much better choice.

You don't need a 12 gauge. A 20 gauge pump action will be plenty.

How many protracted home invasion firefights are there?

Usually it's just displaying the gun, stating you are armed, or firing a warning shot and they are outta there. It's not a Rambo scenario.

You know what they say......."Better judged by 12 than carried by 6.".

BTW..The “AR” in “AR-15” rifle stands for ArmaLite rifle, after the company that developed it in the 1950s. “AR” does NOT stand for “assault rifle” or “automatic rifle.”
And yet women are not using it to kill mass groups of strangers.

Huh. Maybe we need to rethink who should have guns and and who should not.

Yet almost half the members of my gun club are women. Go figure. Many own and shoot the AR-15.

Sure. The AR-15 is a good choice to carry along in a purse while shopping.

My wife likes to shoot AR15s as well. It really is a great platform. There's a reason it's insanely popular.
